  6. The U.S. military received hundreds of new reports of potential UFOs over the span of just over a year, according to an unclassified document released by the government last week. The filing documents 366 total incidents in which unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) were observed between March 2021 and August 2022. More than half of those were categorized as “unremarkable” and attributed to objects like balloons, drones and “clutter.” But that left 171 that could not be readily explained, including some that appeared to demonstrate “unusual flight characteristics or performance capabilities.”

Per reference (a), this message announces the rescission of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination requirement for members of the Armed Forces. As a result, reference (b) is hereby canceled. 2. COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be safe, effective, and life-saving. I am confident that our high vaccination percentage across the Department of the Navy (DON) has both saved lives, and prevented hospitalizations across our entire force. 3. The Navy and Marine Corps are inherently expeditionary forces in readiness, and my expectation continues to be that all Sailors and Marines be worldwide deployable. To defend the nation, we need a healthy and ready force, this means a Navy and Marine Corps that is ready to deploy. Having credible, capable forces requires the DON to minimize addressable risks – contagious disease is a threat to our fighting forces. We will continue to consider medical readiness, of which vaccination plays a key role, in all appropriate settings. All commanders have the responsibility and authority to maintain military readiness, unit cohesion, good order and discipline, and the health and safety of their commands. 4. Because reference (b) is now canceled, the Services shall cease any ongoing reviews of current Service Members' religious, administrative, or medical accommodation requests solely for exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine or appeals of denials of such requests. No currently serving Sailor or Marine shall be separated solely on the basis of their failure to receive the COVID-19 vaccination if they sought an accommodation on religious, administrative, or medical grounds. 5. We will continue to promote and encourage the COVID-19 vaccination for everyone. As with all of our vaccinations, healthcare providers will continue to medically screen for contraindications. I thank you for your selfless devotion to your colleagues, military and civilian, throughout this pandemic. 6. Daniel Swift, a Navy Special Warfare Operator First Class who had gone AWOL, died Jan. 18 after suffering injuries with a unit under attack by Russia, the official said.
  12. Police found a pink children's shirt and a small bundle of curly hair. The community affectionately nicknamed her Baby Jane Doe. Her father was stationed at Mayport.
  13. The Navy may have the most complicated rank structure when it comes to its ratings system, but there is another, much more uncouth method for establishing hierarchy among sailors: Filthy coffee mugs. It is a commonly-held truth in the seafaring service that one can tell a higher-up from a newbie based on the amount of sludge that lives in the bottom of one’s coffee cup.
  14. The Navy on Thursday announced details on the military’s new policy providing 12 weeks of parental leave to parents after birth, adoption or long-term foster care placement. Before the change, new moms got six weeks of parental leave and six weeks of convalescent leave.
  15. The Navy removed the commanding officers of a guided-missile destroyer and an amphibious warship on Wednesday, the sea service announced Thursday. Both commanders were not accused of misconduct and were removed from command for performance issues, a Navy official told USNI News on Thursday. Capt. Michael Nordeen was removed as the commanding officer of amphibious warship USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19), by Expeditionary Strike Group 2 commander Rear. Adm. Tom Williams cited a lack of confidence in his ability to lead, according to a Navy release. Nordeen was reassigned to the staff of commander, Naval Force Atlantic. Nordeen assumed command of the Norfolk-based ship on Aug. 3, 2022, according to his Navy biography.

  18. Navy leaders as well as congressional representatives are vowing to address the service's persistent mental health problems, which have been punctuated by a recent suicide crisis, after a tour of a facility where four sailors died by suicide in just over a month. Lawmakers are pointing to a 2021 law that was meant to provide help and asking why it hasn't been fully put into effect by the Pentagon.
  19. The Navy has officially stopped separating sailors who refuse the COVID vaccine, a fleetwide order that follows Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Jan. 10 directive to end the mandate. In a Jan. 11 naval administrative message, Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Rick Cheeseman noted that all commands will “immediately discontinue administrative separation processing of Navy Service Members solely for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, including those with approved separation letters.”
  20. Officials overseeing development of the US Navy’s next-generation submarine to carry nuclear missiles don’t have the information they need to know whether the first vessel in the $132 billion Columbia program can deploy on time in 2031, an unreleased congressional audit found.
  21. Life insurance coverage for service members will rise for the first time in 18 years beginning March 1. The maximum coverage under the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance program, which benefits designated beneficiaries, will increase from $400,000 to $500,000.

On Thursday, police in Uruma city arrested a sailor assigned to White Beach Naval Facility for allegedly driving in the wrong lane and colliding head-on with another vehicle, a police spokesman told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday.
  23. The new year is here, so it’s important to take stock of your family’s overall health plan coverage. This is especially true when it comes to other health insurance (OHI). You may have had OHI last year, but now no longer. Or perhaps you’ve recently gained or changed OHI. In any of these cases, make sure your OHI information is current with TRICARE, so your health care claims are processed accurately. “It’s important to tell your doctor and other health care providers if you have coverage in addition to TRICARE,” said Shane Pham, TRICARE Health Plan policy and programs analyst at the Defense Health Agency. “This will help them send your bills to the correct payer and avoid delays.”
