  2. A Maryland woman who joined a family scheme that defrauded the Department of Veterans Affairs of at least $1 million was convicted of federal charges and now faces up to 15 years in prison. Mary Francis Biggs, 65, was found guilty Monday of conspiracy to commit fraud and theft of government property. The jury concluded that Biggs had colluded with her daughter Angela Farr, a Navy veteran, to obtain $170,000 in disability benefits in her husband’s name.

Washington (CNN)The family of a US Navy officer imprisoned in Japan rallied outside the White House on Wednesday to protest his detention and try to attract President Joe Biden's attention to the case. Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis was sentenced to three years in a Japanese prison in October for what Japanese courts deemed to be the negligent driving deaths of two Japanese citizens in May 2021. Alkonis appealed, but his sentence was upheld last month.

A military appeals court has reinstated charges against a Navy corpsman accused of playing a role in the killing of a former Green Beret working as a contractor in Iraq, adding another twist to legal proceedings that have been plagued with delays and allegations by the defendant of intimidation by Marine leaders. Navy Chief Petty Officer Eric Gilmet was serving with the 3rd Marine Raider Battalion – part of Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) – stationed in Iraq. On Jan. 1, 2019, Gilmet allegedly had an argument with former Green Beret Rick Rodriguez at a bar in Erbil. Gilmet and three other Marines from his battalion allegedly got into a fight with Rodriguez, and one of them punched him in the head, seriously injuring him.

A U.S. Navy lieutenant based in Tidewater has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Hampton woman whose remains were discovered by the side of the road last month in Hanover County. Emmanuel Dewayne Coble, 27, of Hampton, was also charged with felony use of a firearm in the killing of Raquiah Paulette King, 20, also of Hampton, whose remains were found July 21 near the intersection of Winns Church and Greenwood roads. The state medical examiner’s office determined she was shot to death.

(Tribune News Service) — George Bryan Dodson II, the 23-year-old Navy technician charged with killing his wife and setting their New London, Conn., home on fire in an alleged attempt to kill their son, appeared in court Monday morning and entered a plea of not guilty. Dodson is charged with murder, attempted murder, arson and cruelty to animals after allegedly setting fires throughout his family’s Sherman Street home on July 20 after killing his 23-year-old wife Shelby Dodson using a hammer, according to the New London Police Department.
  16. On August 3, the US Navy's "digital quarterback," the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, celebrated the 15th anniversary of its first flight. The E-2D is the newest variant of the E-2 airborne early warning and control aircraft. In service since 1964, it is a considerable improvement over its predecessors.

NORFOLK (WAVY) – Residents in three Northside neighborhoods learned this week that the Navy wants to remove about 400 trees that present “an immediate safety risk for aircraft” using Chambers Field on Naval Station Norfolk. The work would begin this fall and run for about a year, according to a letter that went out from base commanding officer Capt. David Dees. Officials invited residents to a public meeting on August 22 at Northside Middle School from 4 to 7 p.m.

Ricky W.   22. Future sailors and veterans who agree to re-up can combine the maximum enlistment bonus with a maximum student loan repayment — to cap out at $115,000 — provided they enlist or reassess into active duty and can ship out before the end of September. The Navy, which raised the maximum enlistment bonus to $50,000 in February, said the incentives aim to attract the “highest quality of recruits,” and come as all the services struggle to hit recruitment quotas this fiscal year.

The Navy plans to put $14.9 million toward helping the Pearl Harbor Aquifer, the most recent effort in the sea service’s steps to regain the trust of the Hawaiian people after a leak at the Red Hill Fuel Facility polluted drinking water.
