YOKOSUKA, Kanagawa (Kyodo) -- A Japanese court sentenced a member of the U.S. Navy to 28 months in prison on Thursday, suspended for four years, for randomly attacking and injuring four people near Tokyo in July 2022. The Yokosuka branch of the Yokohama District Court said Daniel Krieger, 31, charged into four passersby, aged in their 20s to 60s, on the night of July 9, 2022 in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture. Krieger, who is stationed at the U.S. naval base in the prefecture's Yokosuka, kicked two of the four, resulting in injuries including a facial fracture and cervical sprain, the ruling said.

Shipuilder Newport News Shipbuilding, Va., informed the Department of Justice of faulty welds that may have been made intentionally on non-critical components on in-service Navy submarines and aircraft carriers, USNI News has learned. HII reported to the Navy that welds on new construction and in-service submarines and Ford-class aircraft carriers were made not following welding procedure, according to a Tuesday memo from Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition Nickolas Guertin to Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti. Guertin told SECNAV and CNO the workers did not follow proper techniques to weld the suspect joints with an early indication that some of the welding errors were intentional. Based on the Newport News assessment of the welds, the shipyard notified the Department of Justice over the issue.

The difficulty of separation from loved ones in the military is no secret. It’s well documented to the point of cliché in books, stories, and movies. It’s reported that troops in WWII would weep upon hearing the song “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Just about everyone knows what a Dear John letter is.

ALLS CHURCH, Va. – Do you know the difference between emergency and urgent care? It can make a difference in your health. Both emergency rooms and urgent care clinics can help you with a medical issue. But they’re different and serve your needs in different ways. When you or a family member needs medical care quickly, it’s important to know the difference between the two. “In times of stress or concern—like having a sick or injured family member—it can be difficult to know what the right course of care might be,” said Jeannine Pickrell, RN, nurse director of Population Health, TRICARE Health Plan, at the Defense Health Agency. “Making the right choice will ensure you and your family receive the right level of care when you need it.”

The Navy will now require naval aviators to serve past their minimum service requirement in order to complete their second, two-year sea tour — the sea service’s latest attempt to boost retention in the aviation community, according to an internal briefing document obtained by Navy Times. The policy applies to officers serving in their first shore tour with a projected rotation date of October 2025 and beyond, and is being implemented due to “personnel shortages across second sea duty billets,” the Naval Air Forces document states.

Billy Jones stood overlooking the Alaskan village of Angoon and took stock of what the U.S. Navy had wrought. Long spruce houses blasted apart by U.S. warships. Food stores burned. The U.S. troops responsible had gathered canoes — the village’s lifeblood — and smashed them to pieces. At least six children died, according to historical accounts, asphyxiated by the smoke of their smoldering homes.
