The US Navy Is Going All In on Starlink
Tony posted a topic in News, Scuttlebutt Forum | Navy Policy
Life aboard a US Navy warship at sea can be stressful, boring, and lonely, with separation from friends and family and long stretches between port calls both isolating and monotonous. Now, Elon Musk is here to take the edge off. In a now deleted press release from the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR), the Navy recently announced that it is experimenting with bringing reliable and persistent high-speed internet to its surface warships. The connectivity comes via a new system developed under its Sailor Edge Afloat and Ashore (SEA2) initiative, which uses satellites from the Starlink network maintained by Musk’s SpaceX and other spaceborne broadband internet providers to maintain a constant and consistent internet connection for sailors—a system that NAVWAR says has “applications across the entire Navy.” -
Today’s Navy sailors are likely familiar with the jarring loss of internet connectivity that can come with a ship’s deployment. For a variety of reasons, including operational security, a crew’s internet access is regularly restricted while underway, to preserve bandwidth for the mission and to keep their ship safe from nefarious online attacks. But the senior enlisted leaders among the littoral combat ship Manchester’s gold crew knew no such privation last year,

Two U.S. Marines from the USS Wasp were attacked Monday during a port visit in Izmir, Turkey, according to a Navy spokesperson. The Marines, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, were "on liberty" at the time of the incident and taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution, said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Timothy Gorman, U.S. Sixth Fleet spokesperson. The Marines have since returned to their ship.

More troops’ household goods will move under a new system aimed at improving service member moves starting next month. U.S. Transportation Command officials are adding 16 more installations for limited local household goods moves, in addition to the 15 bases where troops’ belongings have been moving locally under the new system since April, officials announced Tuesday.

The Navy fired the commanding officer of the destroyer John S. McCain Friday in the middle of the warship’s Middle East deployment. The service’s statement announcing the firing did not note a reason for Cmdr. Cameron Yaste’s relief, stating only that it occurred “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command the guided-missile destroyer.”

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Jan. 1, 2025, marks the start of health care delivery under TRICARE’s new regional contracts. There will be changes to the TRICARE regions in the United States as part of the new contracts. While there will still be two TRICARE regions, six states currently in the East Region (Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin) will move to the West Region.

A Navy veteran in California has been entertaining the local community with his creative bubble performances for over 10 years. But Sandy Snakenberg, known as the "Bubble Pirate," was donning his pirate costume and performing his usual bubble show at La Jolla Cove in San Diego last week when he was issued a ticket by park officials...

The death of Navy SEAL candidate Kyle Mullen, a fit 24-year-old who died at the tail end of the grueling SEAL BUD/s selection program in February 2022, became national news as his family sought to understand what had happened. After a rare, outside investigation of the incident found that Capt. Brad Geary, along with other members of the command, were negligent in their leadership responsibilities and that medical care for recruits was lacking, he was removed from command and now, more than a year later, is facing a board of inquiry that has the power to boot him from the Navy, his lawyer said last week.

In the span of just a few weeks, Marc McCabe traveled this summer to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, California, and Texas. But the 74-year-old wasn’t on an epic retirement trip. As a pro bono veterans advocate, he was searching for Vietnam veterans and surviving family members who may be eligible for disability compensation. McCabe, a former combat corpsman attached to Marine Corps units during the Vietnam War, has survived two bouts of cancer himself. He has been a veteran’s advocate for two decades, but his job has gotten a lot busier thanks to a spate of new legislation that has expanded benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic chemicals in war.

For the first time in three years, the Navy will likely meet its recruiting numbers, Navy recruiting leaders told reporters Thursday. The Navy set a recruiting goal of 40,600 active-duty sailors for Fiscal Year 2024, an increase over the previous year despite the sea service falling short. The Navy is on track to meet the goal Rear Adm. Jeffrey Czerewko, commander of Naval Education and Training Command, said during a roundtable ahead of October’s official tally. The Navy will likely have a buffer through its delayed entry program, which will have around 11,000 recruits in it at the start of FY 25. The Navy, like other services, depleted the delayed entry program, which allows them to recruit sailors but not immediately send them to boot camp, in order to address low recruiting numbers.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Flu season is right around the corner—which means it’s time to start thinking about getting vaccines for common respiratory diseases. If you live or travel overseas, it’s important to know where you can get these vaccines. TRICARE covers flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, vaccines based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations. You may even be able to get all three vaccines at the same time, as described on the CDC website. “As the COVID-19 virus constantly changes, new variants may spread more quickly,” said Michael Griffin, a program analyst with the TRICARE Overseas Program Office at the Defense Health Agency. “But vaccines are still the most effective way to lower your chance of becoming seriously sick from COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses.” Overseas, the process for getting these vaccines may vary depending on your location. Here’s what you need to know:

Just so that it is clear, I am upset that anyone would take advantage of a place considered sacred to the many veterans that died in the line of duty, and their families who are referred to as Gold Star Survivors. I do understand that some Gold Star families invited a group for services in Arlington National Cemetery, but they were invited into Section 60 which explicitly forbids the type of activity that they engaged in that day (the video and photography for campaign purposes.) And as for Arlington National Cemetery as a whole, it clearly prohibits “political campaign or election-related activities within the cemeteries” - it's in the handout. And it should be mentioned that other Gold Star families did not approve of this stunt. That brings me to the point of why I may be a little upset. With all the things veterans have to put up with, the hard work, little pay, homelessness, healthcare issues, mental healthcare issues, why not just leave their "last place on earth" out of reach of those who have intentions other than to respect the veterans who sacrificed their lives for our country? This is not about political parties or presidential races, this is about respect for our veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. 32 CFR § 553.32 - Conduct of memorial services and ceremonies.

Hanwha Ocean announced that it has been awarded a contract to overhaul a 40,000-ton U.S. Navy dry cargo and ammunition ship, becoming the first South Korean shipyard to secure a ship maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) contract from the U.S. Navy. This project involves a regular overhaul of a large U.S. Navy vessel, a task that can only be undertaken by companies holding a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA).

WASHINGTON — Roughly 100,000 veterans who received bonuses to separate from the military early have been forced to return the money in the last 10 years because they were also receiving disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to agency officials. The bonuses collected by the VA total more than $2.5 billion and the numbers could increase drastically as more veterans apply for compensation through a law passed two years ago to provide benefits for those suffering from illnesses caused by toxic exposure, including burn pits. NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Approximately 25 percent of sailors in the surface fleet have bought into the “Get Real Get Better” principles two years after the Navy issued its push to improve culture in the service, according to surface fleet leaders. The rest know little about it, according to a survey of about 1,000 sailors that a San Diego-based command conducted among ship crews on the waterfront to gauge what they knew about the Navy’s initiative.
