Three sailors who served on the same aircraft carrier in Virginia have turned up dead within a week, military officials said Tuesday. A sailor was found unresponsive on board the USS George Washington this past Friday, as the carrier is being overhauled at the Newport News Shipbuilding, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert Myers said in a statement to NBC News.

These details and much more were released in NAVADMIN 072/22 on March 18. Putting on the anchors of a Chief Petty Officer and joining the Mess is a pivotal moment in any Sailor’s life. Navy personnel officials recommended reading the message in its entirety to ensure each board evaluates all eligible Sailors. The Reserve Component (RC) Board, which considers those in the Selected Reserve (SELRES), mobilized Individual Ready Reserve and Canvasser Recruiter Sailors (Cycle 110) convenes June 6 and adjourns June 24. The Active Duty (AC) Board which also considers those from the Training and Administration of the Reserves (TAR) (Cycle 254) convenes July 5 and adjourns July 29. A delayed software delivery pushed the Physical Readiness Information Management System 2, or PRIMS-2, rollout into April, the month the new physical fitness testing season began, according to a spokeswoman for the Navy Personnel Command.

The Navy has relieved the commanding officer of Fleet Readiness Center East at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, due to a “loss of confidence in his ability to command.” Marine Corps Col. Thomas Atkinson, who took command in May 2021, was relieved Friday by Rear Adm. Joseph Hornbuckle, the commander of Fleet Readiness Centers, based out of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.

The Navy separated 41 sailors over the past week, as the sea service continues to move toward a fully vaccinated operational force. The Navy has so far separated 804 sailors; the vast majority of them were active-duty. In the past week, 39 active-duty sailors were separated, bringing the total to 753, not including the 22 sailors separated in their first 180 days. Two reservists were also separated in the past week, which brings the total number of reservists separated to 27.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- The U.S. Navy said Wednesday it will begin a new task force with allied countries to patrol the Red Sea after a series of attacks attributed to Yemen's Houthi rebels in a waterway that's essential to global trade. Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, who oversees the Navy's Mideast-based 5th Fleet, declined four times to directly name the Iran-backed Houthis in his remarks to journalists announcing the task force. However, the Houthis have launched explosive-laden drone boats and mines into the waters of the Red Sea, which runs from Egypt's Suez Canal in the north, down through the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the south that separates Africa from the Arabian Peninsula.

A Navy petty officer and his wife face charges on Guam of family violence and child abuse after a pediatrician discovered arm, rib and skull fractures on the couple’s 3-month-old child, according to a magistrate’s complaint. Austin Christopher Johnson, 22, and his wife, Nica Mae Johnson, 20, were arrested over the weekend and charged Monday in Guam Superior Court, the complaint states. The charges are third-degree felonies.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy would not buy more ships if it were given more money in fiscal 2023. The Navy often uses its so-called unfunded priorities list sent to Congress to ask for another destroyer or connector vessel. But the service is standing firm in its belief that it doesn’t want a fleet any larger than what it can afford to keep ready — having enough sailors, funding for training, dollars and shipyard capacity for maintenance and modernization work, munitions to fill missile launchers, spares to fill stock rooms, and more.
