Navy investigators are offering a $2,000 reward for information on a December 2022 fire aboard the destroyer USS Carney, a blaze they have deemed likely to have resulted from arson. In a social media post made Thursday evening, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service said it is looking "for information leading to the identification of those responsible for starting a fire" aboard the Mayport, Florida-based ship in the early morning hours of Dec. 23. The service had not previously indicated that it considered the blaze intentional.

In FY 2022, there were 8,942 reports, according to the annual report. The Navy reported receiving 2,052 reports, up 9 percent over the previous fiscal year, according to the Navy-specific report. Of the reports, 1,363 were unrestricted, meaning the case can be forwarded on to criminal and prosecutorial services. The other 862 were restricted, although 20 percent converted to unrestricted. The Navy saw both an increase in restricted and unrestricted reporting, but restricted reporting increased by more than 18 percent.

A bill set to be introduced in the Senate as soon as Thursday aims to cut costs and expand mental health care access for families of active-duty service members, a senator sponsoring the legislation said. The Military Families Mental Health Services Act would provide active-duty military family members covered by Tricare — the military’s health insurance provider — three free outpatient mental health visits per year, said Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga. Ossoff was expected to announce the new bill co-sponsored by Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., on Thursday.

On the afternoon of Aug. 18, 2022, Navy Seaman Ty Knight had little idea he was about to help save a life. Yet when the moment came, it felt like instinct for him to leap into action. “I felt an adrenaline rush. I just pumped up,” Knight said. A native of Old Miakka and a Navy petty officer third class pursuing a master’s degree in information systems from the University of Maryland, Knight was honored with the Sailor of the Year award at the United Service Organizations Service Member of the Year awards on March 23.

ARLINGTON, Va. - The lights above the water’s surface cast a ghostly glow on the bottom of the sprawling tank, as a U.S. Navy diver deftly swam through a sunken aircraft fuselage. Wearing a special diving suit designed to protect against the crushing pressure of ocean depths, the diver found her target — a mannequin representing a human body. The exercise was part of a simulated crash recovery mission to test the capabilities of the Deep Sea Expeditionary with No Decompression (DSEND) system, which includes a hardened yet lightweight atmospheric dive suit featuring rotating, detachable joints allowing for greater dexterity, flexibility and maneuverability.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Presidents Joe Biden and Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday will sign an agreement that includes plans to have U.S. nuclear-armed submarines dock in South Korea for the first time in more than 40 years, a conspicuous show of support to Seoul amid growing concern about nuclear threats by North Korea, according to senior Biden administration officials. The planned dock visits are a key element of what’s being dubbed the “Washington Declaration,” aimed at deterring North Korea from carrying out an attack on its neighbor. It is being unveiled as Biden is hosting Yoon for a state visit during a moment of heightened anxiety for both leaders over an increased pace of ballistic missile tests by North Korea over the last several months.

The Embedded Mental Health Clinic at Naval Base San Diego is just steps away from the bustling waterfront that’s home to 51 Navy surface vessels. The clinic, which opened in October, serves the thousands of sailors stationed on those ships. San Diego’s clinic is one of several now in operation across the Navy’s surface fleet concentration areas around the world. Capt. Tara Smith, the mental health officer for Surface Force Pacific Fleet in San Diego, said the clinic’s 20 providers have been busy since it opened. Sailors working on ships experience stressors unique to their jobs, she said.

WASHINGTON — Independent government auditors have concluded the US Navy lacks a centralized “process” for learning from and improving its ability to prevent shipboard fires and is not effectively analyzing the impact such fires have on its fleet. “Establishing a process for the consistent collection, analysis, and sharing of fire-related lessons learned would assist the Navy to improve behavior and reduce the risk of ships repeating costly mistakes,” according to an April 20 report by the Government Accountability Office.

Details emerged Sunday from the dramatic evacuation of U.S. diplomats from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum while aid workers and other Americans remained imperiled amid the raging warfare pitting rival generals. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner said most of the thousands of Americans remaining in Sudan are aid workers or Sudanese Americans. He said they need to "shelter in place" while the U.S. works with international partners to arrange a “safe way to get them out," likely via a land corridor. The violence has paralyzed Sudan's airports, destroying civilian planes and damaging runways.

The Veterans Crisis Line is fielding a record number of cries for help, the Department of Veterans Affairs said, amid increased mental health concerns for post-9/11 veterans and service members. The suicide hotline received more than 88,000 calls, texts and chats in March — the highest amount of monthly contacts it has ever had, according to new federal data obtained by NBC News.

Many fires that happen aboard Navy ships while they’re in port aren’t documented, leaving the service without an accurate idea of how widespread the problem is, a government watchdog agency found. The reasons sailors aren’t noting fires vary, but a culture that discourages full compliance with reporting requirements was a factor, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Thursday.
