A new ranking of the 49 most dangerous submarines in the world includes A-list heavy hitters, but also some of the smallest subs in service. The list features the American Ohio-class guided missile submarines, each of which can blanket targets with up to 154 cruise missiles, as well as some vessels originally built during World War II and midget subs designed by Iran and North Korea.

Canvasser Recruiter (CANREC) personnel with a branch class of 32 and a special program indicator code of *W* (enlisted CANREC) will no longer take Active-Duty exams. Commencing with the February 2021 (cycle 108) E-7 Selected Reserve (SELRES) exams, CANREC E-6 personnel are authorized to take the SELRES exam for Limited Duty Officer (LDO) purposes. The administration of the exam across a window and shifting CANREC Sailors to take the SELRES exam are both changes to reference (a). Information pertaining to selection board criteria will be promulgated in a future NAVADMIN. 2. Timeline a. 18-29 January 2021: Administration of exams. b. 31 January 2021: Congressionally designated combat zones and approved contingency operations areas (CDCZ/ACOA) evaluations used for time- in-rate (TIR) waivers must have an ending period by this date. 3. Eligibility requirements are found in chapter 2 of reference (a). The following information is specific only to cycle 250: a. The terminal eligibility date used to compute TIR is 1 January 2022. b. The minimum TIR date must be on or before 1 January 2019. c. TIR requirements for early promote Sailors can be waived by 1 year with the commanding officer (CO)/officer-in-charge (OIC) approval, in line with paragraph 214.e. of reference (a). d. High-year tenure (HYT) date must be effective 1 September 2021 or later. All HYT waivers must be approved prior to 21 January 2021. e. Candidates in a rating requiring a security clearance must have a favorable investigation adjudication by the Department of Defense Central Adjudication Facility reflected properly in the Joint Personnel Adjudication System (JPAS) prior to 1 January 2021. If the CO of the candidate grants an interim clearance, JPAS must be updated prior to 1 January 2021. Candidates who do not meet the outlined criteria should not be allowed to participate in the exam. Candidates must maintain security clearance eligibility throughout the advancement cycle to be eligible for advancement. If, for any reason, a clearance is denied or revoked, an exam is not authorized until a new clearance is granted. Ratings requiring a security clearance are AC, AE, AG, AO, ATI, ATO, AWF, AWO, AWR, AWS, AWV, AZ, CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, CTT, EOD, ET, FC, FCA, GM, HT, IC, IS, IT, LN, MA, MC, MN, ND, OS, QM, SB, SO, STG, YN, as well as all nuclear and submarine ratings. RSCA PMA must be computed as outlined in reference (c), using E-6 evaluations with the ending date that falls within the period of 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2020. Order exams in line with chapter 4 of reference (a). a. Deploying commands and candidates departing to CDCZ/ACOA can order exams up to 6 months prior to the scheduled exam date. Refer to chapter 4 and paragraph 614 of reference (a) for additional guidance. b. Regular Exams: (1) Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Exams. Cryptologic-Technician Interpretive (CTI)/Cryptologic-Technician Network (CTN)/Cryptologic Technician-Collection (CTR) SCI exam ordering dates can be found on the Navy Enlisted Advancement System (NEAS) website via MyNavy Portal at https://www.mnp.navy.mil/. FY-21 Active Duty E-7 Quotas. A few rates have been updated.

The Chinese navy's Shenyang J-15 fighters do not stand much of a chance against the US Navy's F/A-18s today, but that may not always be the case, especially as China builds a better aircraft carrier, experts told Insider. China has the world's largest navy, according to the Pentagon's latest assessment, and it continues to grow. In recent years, the country has managed to field two aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and the Shandong, both of which carry complements of Shenyang J-15 "Flying Shark" fighter jets.

Being a U.S. Navy admiral wasn’t even on Matthew J. Burns’ radar when he graduated from high school in the mid-1980s. The New Jersey native tried college for a semester, but quickly realized he did not have either the study habits or self-discipline to succeed, so he turned to the military with the help of his brother, who was already an enlisted Navy SEAL.

Earlier this week, a quad-copter-type drone delivered a small payload to the U.S. Navy's Ohio class ballistic missile submarine USS Henry M. Jackson as it sailed on the surface of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The service said that this was a test to explore novel concepts for resupplying Ohio class submarines while they're out on their nuclear deterrent patrols, but it certainly also brings up thoughts about how some aspects of at-sea replenishment, in general, may look in the future.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, special leave accrual is authorized for military members on active duty, of up to 120 days. This authorization applies to leave earned between March 11 and Sept 30, 2020. Sailors will have until the end of fiscal-year 2023 to use or lose those days.

WASHINGTON — Two sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt have been infected with the coronavirus, several months after a serious outbreak of the virus on the aircraft carrier derailed its deployment, Navy officials said Friday. The sailors were at sea aboard the ship off the California coast when they self-reported symptoms of the virus, Cmdr. Zach Harrell, a spokesman for Naval Air Forces, said in a statement issued Friday.

The U.S. Navy could start keeping its submarines at a former Norwegian naval base. The base, located at Olavsvern in northern Norway, is built under a hill resting alongside the Norwegian Sea, with a large entrance capable of admitting ships and submarines.

The Navy is reviewing a policy that did away with permanent shaving waivers for sailors diagnosed with razor bumps after receiving feedback through recent diversity and inclusion initiatives, the chief of naval operations said Tuesday in an interview with Defense One. The Navy, under Adm. Mike Gilday’s leadership, halted the waivers, often referred to as “no-shave chits,” on Oct. 4, 2019, following a series of reviews by the Naval Safety Center that said beard hair posed a safety risk for face seals on breathing devices such as respirators.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy is looking to build a new generation of destroyers from a clean-sheet design, following the model of one of its most successful ship classes, the Arleigh Burke-class DDG, the service’s top officer said Tuesday. The idea, colloquially referred to in-house as DDG Next, is to build a new hull smaller than the nearly 16,000-ton Zumwalt-class destroyer but still big enough to accommodate a larger missile magazine, Adm. Michael Gilday told a virtual audience at Defense One’s State of the Navy event.

WASHINGTON — The Navy on Friday night abruptly shut down the church, schools, gym and most places where people congregate at its base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, returning to the strict restrictions it had imposed earlier in the coronavirus pandemic.
