  1. Little is known of Wilhelm Smith’s background, save that he was born on April 10, 1870, in a German Empire that would formally unite in the following year. Since then, he emigrated to the United States and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. By January 1916, he was serving as a gunner’s mate third class aboard the battleship New York (BB-34), one of the most up-to-date and powerful warships of its kind. For all that, though, New York was served by a variety of seamen and engineers in an often claustrophobic labyrinth of chambers and passageways. On Jan. 24, 1916, one of New York’s crews within a crew were reminded of how dangerous even a routine procedure could be.

  2. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their application online through the NMCRS Education Assistance Application website. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2025.

  3. “Registering your newborn in DEERS as soon as possible helps ensure a smooth transition into TRICARE coverage,” said Zelly Zim, senior program analyst, TRICARE Health Plan Policy & Programs Division at the Defense Health Agency. “Taking this step early gives families time to confirm enrollment, understand their plan options, and avoid delays in care.”

The exact process and timing depend on where your baby is born.

  4. The tension between some Coast Guard officials and Noem began after a 23-year-old Coast Guardsman went overboard into the Pacific Ocean from the cutter Waesche on Feb. 4 last year, shortly after the Senate confirmed Noem into her role, according to the two U.S. officials, the Coast Guard official and the former Coast Guard official.

The Coast Guard had surged ships and aircraft to the Pacific to find the guardsman. Hours into the search, Noem learned that a Coast Guard C-130 that was supposed to fly detained migrants from California to Texas was among the aircraft over the Pacific looking for the missing guardsman, and she intervened, according to the two U.S. officials and the Coast Guard official.

  5. “My girlfriend, now my wife, said I should ask [Bondi] when “Phase 2″ will come out. And I asked Pam Bondi that in person, very politely. And she basically said, ‘There’s nothing but child porn left, it’s disgusting and nobody would want to see it.’ And at that point, I realized that the Trump administration had undertaken a cover-up and had no intention of releasing these files,” Massie said.

“This is bigger than Watergate,” he added. “If Watergate changed your perception of government, this should definitely do the same.”

  6. A significant finding noted in the report is that nearly 61% of veterans who died by suicide in 2023 had not received VA health care in the year leading to their deaths. Additionally, the suicide rate per 100,000 veterans reached 35.2, the highest figure since 2018.

Both male and female veterans experienced an increase in suicide rates, with female veterans rising from 13.7 to 13.9 per 100,000, and male veterans from 37.3 to 37.8 per 100,000. There is particular concern regarding veterans aged 18-34, who are noted to have elevated risk factors such as health issues, homelessness, and chronic pain.

  7. WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. military is preparing for the possibility of sustained, weeks-long operations against Iran if president trump orders an attack, two U.S. officials told Reuters, in what could become a ‌far more serious conflict than previously seen between the countries.

The disclosure by the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due ‌to the sensitive nature of the planning, raises the stakes for the diplomacy underway between the United States and Iran.

  8. CFL/ACFLs,

PARFQ Display Error in PRIMS.  A data feed issue is causing PARFQ submissions from MyNavy Portal (MNP) to display incorrectly in PRIMS.  Please follow this interim guidance while eCRM Developers work to resolve the issue:

    • Sailors:  continue to submit your PARFQ in MNP as normal.
    • CFL/ACFLs:  to view correct PARFQ data, use the report template “PARFQ Report Cycle 1 2026 Correct View."
    • If a PARFQ needs an edit, the Sailor must fill out a paper version for the CFL to review and keep on file, as required by OPNAVINST 6110.1L
    • The PRP office will provide an update once more information is available or when the issue is resolved.
