WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it has lowered the interest rate for VA Native American Direct Loans from 6% to 2.5%, making access to housing loans more affordable for Native American Veterans. Through the VA Native American Direct Loan program, VA provides direct loans to Native American Veterans — and to Veterans who are married to Native American non-Veterans — to help buy, build or improve a home on trust land. These loans give Native American Veterans the opportunity to obtain housing with no down payments, limited closing costs,and no monthly mortgage-insurance costs.

The Navy last week approved plans to keep the guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke in service another five years, meaning the first-in-class ship will have sailed for four decades before its retirement. The destroyer, homeported at Naval Station Rota, Spain, was slated for decommissioning in 2026 at the end of its anticipated 35-year service life. With the extension, the ship will operate until fiscal year 2031, according to a March 14 news release from Naval Surface Force Atlantic.

A Navy cryptologic technician died during a secretive mission to an undisclosed country in 2021 after a freak windstorm caused part of the building in which her team was operating to collapse, according to an internal investigation obtained by Navy Times. Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Robin Nicole Collins, 26, was just three days into her deployment when she died on July 18, 2021.

WASHINGTON — The nuclear-powered attack submarine Boise (SSN-764) will remain in port for at least another year as the Navy eyes funding its long awaited maintenance availability at the end of 2023, a service spokesman told Breaking Defense. The Navy’s new fiscal 2024 budget request includes funds to conduct an engineered overhaul of the Boise, a Los Angeles-class sub that launched back in 1991 but has sat in port since 2017 when a series of delays ultimately denied a timely maintenance availability at a public shipyard.

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A sailor assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan died Monday evening after falling from an unaccompanied housing building, the base confirmed Tuesday. The sailor, a 22-year-old seaman whose identity was not disclosed, was critically injured in the fall, base spokesman Randall Baucom told Stars and Stripes by email.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – TRICARE develops pilots and demonstrations to test new medical services, treatments, and approaches. These include initiatives for autism care, childbirth support, and low back pain. Certain groups have the chance to benefit from these services during an evaluation period. Results from these programs may inform future benefit changes. “The goal of these pilots and demonstrations is to support better health outcomes, enhance health care experiences, and reduce costs over time,” said Erica Ferron, a management and program analyst with the TRICARE Health Plan. “This is an important process to ensure that TRICARE keeps finding new ways to improve your health care coverage.”

A human rights group is calling on the U.S. to help more than 2,000 Afghan asylum seekers who fled during the withdrawal of American forces in 2021 and are being held in what it calls “prison-like conditions” in the United Arab Emirates. Between 2,400 and 2,700 stranded Afghans are being kept under constant surveillance and denied mental health services, the New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a report Wednesday.
