In an effort to address recruitment shortages for most U.S. military services, Congress is considering a pair of proposals to expand the military draft. One provision would automatically register young men for Selective Service, rather than asking them to do it themselves. The other would also make women eligible for the draft. The odds of either of these changes becoming law, particularly adding women to the draft, appear slim. But the fact that they’re on the table at all speaks to the deep concerns in Washington about the military’s ongoing recruitment struggles, which has led some experts to question the sustainability of the U.S. armed forces.

The US is moving forces closer to Israel and Lebanon amid concerns of escalating cross-border fire, according to two US officials, including forces able to carry out an evacuation of American citizens. The USS Wasp and its Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which includes the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), moved into the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday, the Navy said. The deployment was part of a “long-planned effort,” one official said.

Jan. 23, 1968, was an exciting day for me. I had no idea just how exciting it would turn out to be. I’d recently returned from three weeks of leave in the US and was finishing up an 18-month tour in the Philippines that included several assignments to exotic places up and down the archipelagic nation. At 21, I felt much more worldly and sophisticated than all my family and friends...

Eisenhower received a reprieve this month when it transited the Suez Canal and headed into the Mediterranean Sea, on its way back home to Norfolk.

In a historic move to address a legacy of discrimination in the U.S. military, President Joe Biden on Wednesday will announce a plan to pardon thousands of LGBTQ veterans who were criminally charged and forced from the service because of their sexual orientation. The news comes less than a week after The War Horse published the story of Army military police officers Mona McGuire and Karla Lehmann, who were dragged from their barracks, interrogated and forced to confess to sodomy charges after someone in their platoon outed them as gay. Thirty-six years later, they still carry the stigma. Now, it appears that could change.

The effort comes as production of SM-6 ramps up into the late 2020s to match inventory requirements, alongside increased production of RIM-162 ESSM Block II.

A former Navy ship captain was convicted last week of cyberstalking and stealing his ex-girlfriend’s identity to create explicit online content, according to the U.S. Justice Department. During a four-day federal trial in San Diego, prosecutors presented evidence that Capt. Theodore E. Essenfeld, 52, created fake Facebook, LinkedIn, email and cell phone accounts using the woman’s name, photographs and personal information without her consent or knowledge.

A Chinese amphibious warship is operating near a disputed South China Sea feature that has been the site of a standoff between Chinese and Philippine Coast Guards, USNI News has learned. An unidentified People’s Liberation Army Navy Type 075-class landing helicopter dock was first seen by a ship spotter in satellite photos in the South China Sea on June 12. On Friday, the 36,000-ton warship stopped near Subi Reef, a reclaimed feature that now hosts a Chinese military base. By Sunday, the amphib was spotted near Sabina Shoal.
