  5. Despite this, the prosecutor’s office opted not to charge Copeland, noting in a statement that military service seemed like a “good option” for him and that he would be supervised. The office also cited his lack of prior criminal history, as no charges were filed in Lopez or her classmates’ case.
  6. Throughout his two presidencies, Trump has treated the military as a prop for making statements about which issues he cares about—and which he doesn’t. He deployed the D.C. National Guard during protests after the murder of George Floyd in summer 2020. Earlier this summer, he federalized the California National Guard and sent Marines to Los Angeles to assist with immigration enforcement, but they were sent home when it became clear that they had nothing to do there. Yet according to testimony before the January 6 panel, Trump did not deploy the D.C. National Guard when an armed mob was sacking the U.S. Capitol in 2021 to try to help Trump hold on to power.

The focus of the New Year's Day Deck Log contest was to celebrate the voices of our Sailors and to preserve a Navy tradition. A deck log is the official record maintained by all commissioned U.S. Navy vessels. While regulations normally restrict the types of entries in logbooks, the Navy has long held the tradition of the Midnight New Year's Poem. The first entry of the New Year, written in verse, allows Sailors to express their creativity about the experiences of shipboard life and their pride in their command. The contest also serves to remind the Fleet of the importance of the deck log as a historical document; one that preserves for future generations the actions and voices of our United States Sailors. 4. Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to your entries next year! 5. 18. It should be apparent by now that it is trump who has the low IQ... These are all — Trump’s slur that Winfrey, Beyoncé and other Black celebrities are basically crooks, and that Black people are inherently lazy — centuries-old white supremacist tropes. His comments are part of a much larger pattern of behavior where he has repeatedly insulted Black people, specifically Black women, as being dumb or stupid or “low IQ.” This is the same white racist “logic” used to justify Black chattel slavery and over 100 years of American apartheid and racial tyranny in the South, and other parts of the country, under the period of Jim Crow and into the post-civil rights era and beyond.
