This board is full of BS is all I can say. 73% nd with all my stuff and I can't make it screw it I'm ready to retire

Guest scrunt95

Well I don't have to retire but I guess I will! I really don't know what else I have to do maybe getting to know the board members would be a plus.  With 17 years 4 months and 21 days on active duty and the rest in the reserves I am tired of playing the hope I get chosen game.  Thank you all for all the updates and I pray you all will put on those anchors soon!!!!!

N number 4 for me, unfortunately.  I am grateful to have had 2 Master Chiefs and 3 Chiefs by my side as I hit refresh repeatedly!  I will take their words of wisdom and guidance to heart and keep moving forward!

Did not happen this year moving on  one more try and then I will drop my retirement papers. Congrats to those who got "Selected" and best to the rest.

Well folks just looked I got the dreaded N so looks like I might hang up my boots and call it a career. I don't think that one extra year would make a difference, so after 20 great years as a Navy CM SEABEE I bid you all a fair well . Congratulations to all that have made it For the rest of you hard charging First classes Keep training the junior folks Be the chief that the Navy has not recognized yet.

Yup. Same here. Not this time....

Non-Selectee, been eligible 4 years in a row now. All I can say is there are some hard charging CM1's out there to get beaten out, well, at least 8 of them based on quotas (Plus the CM1 who was meritoriously advanced as the SOY for the Reserves... BZ). Can't wait to see the list....

FY2013 and FY2014 SOY at the NOSC

2.5 years as Det AOIC

Warfare qual and 9502 NEC

Excellent High's on PFA, security clearance good, no negative marks or actions.

EP evals, sustained superior performer

EP as an IA during 11 month mob (Also had AOIC, LPO, 3MA, Work Center Sup titles) within board eval review time-frame

BS degree, and 8 of 10 classes finished towards my MBA with a Human Resources emphasis.

Volunteer service w/ various groups (No MOVS medal, I guess that's a negative)

Civilian job responsibility (supervise 300 employees) and elected as the company VP of it's Armed Forces Network.

All I can do is press on, work on a Volunteer medal, maybe get some additional 3M quals. Next cycle I'll be done with my MBA. I could have scored higher on my test, too, so I will work on that too.  10 more years before HYT, so I can't be too negative... I'll just celebrate the CM's who made it, I am sure I know many of them!

I have to say that our records are almost identical I am also MTS  9502 trained well over 1000 reservist and a few hundred active duty folks. I am also the AOIC for a 90+ Detachment. I am  the CCC with the NEC, 33 people have advanced under me as their CCC. 4 combat tours to Iraq 1 to Afghanistan. All PFA's have be outstanding. I do tons of community service and volunteer work. So I don't know what is missing. I have 20 years in 14 active and 6 reserve loved every minute of it. I could try again next year but what would be the difference other than a smaller quota. I am getting older I have been in to long and there are brighter and younger people coming up who still have plenty of time in the navy. I wish you good luck Seabee I see you have 10 years before HYT but hopefully you will make it next time.

a reservist that I helped guide to study material/bibliography was selected. He was having trouble making board due to hands on training. Glad to see that his extra effort was not in vain and that he put forth the time/energy to do what was necessary. Congrats ITC select.

What I would like, is for someone to review my record and give it to me straight. Not that it isn't your time, or when its your time you will get it. or the most common one I hear, is that I thought you were ready, I just can't call it. Some feedback. Some real feedback. It's hard to improve when you don't really know what to improve on...

Ok, that was my second rant of the day. That is out of character. :(

The problem with that is that the Board is different every year I have asked chiefs senior chiefs master chief, I even had a retired force master chief that I was stationed with back in battalion look at my package and they all said the same thing there is nothing to add you have every wicket the board is looking for, some others will tell you to add this or to get this NEC I did all that and yet the outcome is still the same. I don't know what goes on in the board they cant talk about what goes on in the board. all they can tell you is the process not what they where looking for. It's either a who you know type of thing or a true to the word miracle in order to make chief. (in my opinion) :bigemo_harabe_net-32:  :graphics-3d-smileys-313328:

On the other hand, someone asked for some help (on this forum), a Chief obliged, and told him "You have a gap in your record that needs fixing ASAP." An extra set of eyes never hurt and having a Chief look at it is like two extra sets...  ;)

Yes the board is slightly different every year.  There isn't one thing that will get you over the line and timing always plays a part.  The way I looked at it was that I need to do everything possible.  I read the precept over and over and looked at every line to see what I could do to accomplish what it was asking for.  Somethings are impossible, for example I would not be able to get expeditionary experience while assigned to Surgemain.  The precept for the most part is purposefully vague.  But read it and reread it to figure out what you can do to accomplish the things they want and make sure it appears in your record and/or eval.

Finally it isn't a game of lets line up our quals and personal accomplishments and see who has more.  Leadership is the most important thing.  I had leadership on my evals going back to the dawn of time, but the year I was picked up my eval had almost nothing to do with what I did directly.  It was that the unit reenlist percentage was this, the advancement percentage was that and this many guys/girls were selected for SOY/JSOY/BJOY.  The less the eval is about you the better it is.

That is always great when Chief step up to help and your right Tony having Chiefs look at your package will never hurt, what I said is that because there is no absolute as to what they are looking for in the board(as far as any one knows for sure) The variance of opinions from all kinds of E-7 and above still will not guaranty that you will make chief. Like I said my record cant have anything else that they haven't already been looking for other than presidential duty or rescuing an admirals wife or daughter. a board member cant contact you and say this is what you missed this year and that is what truly sucks about this process. It really is a crap shoot.

Weelll... What I say is this: it's not the amount of opinions that Chiefs give that is supposed to get you over the top, it's your record and what you have done. If someone is more qualified than you there is nothing you can do about that. And it is always the more qualified member that will be picked.

BUT (and that's a big butt) What you can do, is put yourself in line closer to the top. What etfc1121 posted a few up there is absolutely true. And having Chiefs review your records is to your advantage in moving up that line. You are right about the many variances but the person who takes the additional steps will be noticed AND the person who takes the additional steps will have the knowledge on where to improve.

Appreciate your post.  :)
