In a close call, a Houthi missile came within 200 meters of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower earlier this year, according to a report in CTC Sentinel. Operating in the Red Sea and surrounding regions, the carrier deployed various defenses, but this near-hit underscores growing threats from non-state actors like the Houthis.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new federal evaluation highlighted deficiencies in both the lead-up and response to the Red Hill fuel spill. The Inspector General of the Department of Defense released some scathing reports Thursday over the Navy’s handling of the jet fuel spill at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. He determined Navy officials did not effectively manage the operations of the Red Hill bulk fuel storage facility in accordance with federal and state laws and DoD policy, nor did they respond properly to the fuel incidents.

For the tenth year, the Naval Institute will host the DARE Innovation Workshop. This year's workshop will take place in conjunction with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) West 2025 from Tuesday, January 28th to Thursday, January 30th at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. DARE 2025 will bring together select junior officers, forward-thinking enlisted personnel, and influential civilian leaders to engage on critical issues facing the sea services. 2. DARE 2025 seeks 10-15 highly engaged and thoughtful individuals who will offer creative solutions to pressing sea service issues. Target participants are active and reserve personnel O3-O4 and E5-E7, with various backgrounds and service specialties, and civilian counterparts from various industries and academia. 3. Last year, DARE 2024 participants delivered solutions to service challenges presented by General Eric Smith, Commandant of the Marine Corps. This year, DARE 2025 participants will conduct a root causal analysis, brainstorm, and present solutions in response to two service challenges posed by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Admiral Linda Fagan. Select DARE 2025 participants will brief the Commandant on their group's recommendations. 4. This year, the Commandant has challenged participants to address the following topics: a. Retention: What are the primary factors that would lead you to leave the service? Which factors are most effectively addressed by policy changes, given budgetary constraints? Are there situations where you might feel you have no option but leaving, and how might leadership remove those obstacles to your staying in the service? How can we make your service the best choice for you and your family? b. Innovation: Innovation is more than new technology. In a time of budgetary constraints and an inflexible acquisition process, it is particularly important that we pay credence to the broader definition of innovating, making changes by introducing new methods, ideas, or products, particularly those that have been proven elsewhere. Recognizing we are different services with different systems, what are ways that we could bring in ideas from other service branches or the commercial sector, or share practices to operate more effectively? Specifically, how can we think about how we do work in a smarter or more efficient manner? What are ways we can promote interoperability between the services from the bottom up, at the deckplate level? What does leadership need to do in order to support these initiatives? 5. WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump stunned the Pentagon and the broader defense world by nominating Fox News host Pete Hegseth to serve as his defense secretary, tapping someone largely inexperienced and untested on the global stage to take over the world's largest and most powerful military. The news was met with bewilderment and worry among many in Washington as Trump passed on a number of established national security heavy-hitters and chose an Army National Guard officer well known in conservative circles as a co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) took action against Navy Federal Credit Union for charging illegal overdraft fees. From 2017 to 2022, Navy Federal charged customers surprise overdraft fees on certain ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases, even when their accounts showed sufficient funds at the time of the transactions. The CFPB is ordering Navy Federal to refund more than $80 million to consumers, stop charging illegal overdraft fees, and pay a $15 million civil penalty to the CFPB’s victims relief fund. This is the largest amount the CFPB has ever obtained from a credit union for illegal activity.

The Malaysian contractor known as “Fat Leonard,” who bribed dozens of high-ranking U.S. Navy officers in the Navy’s worst-ever corruption scandal, was sentenced Tuesday in San Diego federal court to 15 years in prison. The sentence means that Leonard Glenn Francis, 60, will spend about 8½ more years in federal prison when taking into account the credit he’ll receive from the more than six years he has already spent in custody, though likely even less if he qualifies for early release.
