Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the statistics screenshotted above are for FY-23. We are waiting for FY-24 results. They have not released the statistics for this cycle yet- those were for last year.

By gosh, you are correct. That is 2023.

If you go into my navy assignment my education tab, it shows your exam cycle rank out of X. It just may be possible that the out of number is the number eligible in your rate...

Your are correct.  THat's the only way you have access to determine that.

There were quotas for 53 new reserve YNCs but only 48 selectees. I wonder if that says something meaningful to those who didn't get selected.

Great observation. I'd say it does.

What does that mean to you?

That obviously there's something still actively wrong with my performance and/or my record that neither I nor my mentors have identified, but the board did.

I don't know about that but I do know, going way back, that it means they could not find enough fully qualified E-6 to fill the spots. That is a big alert for those seeking to advance to Chief. It's also a hint to keep an eye for on the membership list when it comes out. I could be wrong and I hope some of the senior guys and gals chime in on that one.

I’ll offer my perspective as a Chief Select, but my advice is not nearly as valuable as the Chiefs on here, especially those with experience sitting boards…so I’d love to hear their perspective on it. But, what I can say is that I was not selected in FY-19 when they gave back 3 HM FTS quotas. I thought my package was solid as a younger FCPO, but I wouldn’t be here today as a Chief Select if not for that kick in the pants. That motivated me. I honestly was not “best and fully qualified,” although it burned, I believe our community needed that to wake us up. I think the TAR HM community got better because of it. People know and talk about it when quotas are given back. The thought that they’d rather give back quotas than promote me sucked, but it was exactly what I needed. A dose of reality and slice of humble pie. It still took me 4 more years to make it, but over those 4 years I switched gears and worked on helping my Sailors promote and get awarded. I took over as President in the FCPOA and was the Sailor 360 coordinator. It made all the difference for me. Hope that helps a little bit.

@Doc Eb, could you explain they "gave back 3 HM FTS quotas." I'm not familiar with that. 👍

For example, this year there were 24 quotas for HMC TAR Sailors. If they only found 21 HM1’s to be best and fully qualified, then that’s how many Chiefs they would have selected and promoted. They don’t have to promote to the quotas, that just tells the board how spots they “could” use. Thankfully they used every one of those 24 quotas and I was selected this year. In my case, back when I was SBE in FY-19, the board “gave back” 3 of the 42 quotas (selecting 39 HMC’s- if my memory serves me right), and the ones not selected were left wondering why, myself included.

I've seen quotas returned a handful of times, but only when the board was authorized to advance 100% of candidates.  EOD in 2014 seems to come to mind.  But I've never heard of it happening in other cases.  Maybe this is an indication that the considerations for advancement from YN1 to YNC need to be revised?

Very cool. I wasn't familiar with the term give back but now I am. Appreciate it. 😎

So..........I used to contribute on this board a year or two ago, but I guess if you let your acct go idle for too long, it is deleted.

My log in/screen name was OS1(SW/EXW)  but guess what??!!??

Somehow, and I can't wrap my head around it just yet, I was selected this cycle.

I will hit 20yrs next month and had pretty much resigned myself to doing just over my 20 and tapping out. But alas, I guess I will have to re-enlist for another 4yrs to make sure my high-3 is at E-7.

Now onto the topic of quotas.

OSC had 36 slated. I was like OMG, I am IN!! I was up against another OS1 at this command who I thought was equally or better qualified than I was, but thought there might be some outside chance that I could eke in under the top 36.

So I got the call from the CMC and our one-star lettign me know that I was picked up. Crazy, right? I told the CMC that I needed to text the other OS1 and tell him to be ready for his phone call, and the Master Chief said "WHOA...don't text him, I have to talk to him"....he was not selected. He and I enlisted in the same month of the same year at different ends of the country. We probably passed each other by in bootcamp.

I feel bad for him. He is going to tap out and go Army Warrant now. I get it, and I think it's a good idea if that is how you want to go.

Herein lies something to ponder though. There were 36 open slots in the quotas, and they selected 24. Maybe it is just me, but those numbers are a little alarming. I thought that I read the quotas wrong, or there  was a mistake when I got the results, but no. 12 were given back. 1/3 of the available spots were not utilized.

Do I feel lucky and blessed?!? Oh heck yeah I do!
