House lawmakers look to help military families combat inflation by calling for lower prices at commissaries

Eight Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee called on Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to remove the revenue requirement at base commissaries, which would lower grocery prices and help military families better cope with fast-rising inflation.

“Many of our military families are struggling to meet their basic needs due to rising prices,” the lawmakers wrote to Austin in letter dated May 11.

      Navy didn’t understand well-documented risks posed by Hawaii fuel tanks, watchdog says

      HONOLULU (AP) — Navy officials “lacked sufficient understanding” of the risks of maintaining massive fuel storage tanks on top of a drinking water well at Pearl Harbor where spilled jet fuel poisoned more than 6,000 people in 2021, a U.S. military watchdog said Thursday. That lack of awareness came even though officials had engineering drawings and environmental studies that described the risks, the U.S. Department of Defense’s inspector general said.
