Non-advance CDBs hurt. We all feel it. If it doesn't, then you're the fat that needs to be trimmed. However, the CDBs hurt more when you're told...

The Post CDB's do suck. Especially when they always start out...

Better expressions of my point. Thanks.

There seems to be a lot of talk about post-selection CDBs. If you are being told that you are doing everything right and you just have to wait your turn, then you need to take a second and seek out advice from more Chiefs. There is no check in the box, you cannot simply do x amount of things and become a Chief. If you enter your CDB with the mindset that you wont get anything out of it, or that you don't have any areas that you need to improve on, then you're not ready to be a Chief. Every person has room to improve and we all should approach every day as an opportunity to learn and grow more. Best of luck to all of you!

The Post CDB's do suck. Especially when they always start out as "Tell me why you didn't pick-up?" I thought that was one of the reasons for the CDB for them to tell me why they think I didn't make it. I just get told every year keep doing what you are doing you are on the right track. I guess you just have to wait your turn. It just really burns when most of the people you mentored from the time you were an E-5 are already chiefs and your still stuck at E-6. I think I'll just go on leave during the CDB time-frame if I don't see the "S" this year.

We have to keep in mind that some commands have awsome boards while others, as members have stated in the past, are barely functional. And then there's the stories of commands that don't have them at all. To me though "Tell me why you didn't pick-up?" is just irritating since little information comes out of the CPO selection board in the first place.

Keep in mind though, there are some Chiefs willing to bend over backwards and not expect any recognition to help you make Chief...

I wholeheartedly agree, Tony! Imagine the frustration a Shipmate has to have if they reviewed their last non-select CDB, they got after it and hit all the marks that were suggested and still did not make it. My command's last CPO 365 topic was about CDBs and the disservice to our people when we either don't perform them or simply go through the motions. Starting a non-select CDB off with "tell me why you didn't make it", can put that board at risk for being counterproductive. The E5s and below that I hold CDBs for already get their last CDB reviewed so I can tell them what they came up short on and find ways to keep them motivated. If all the suggestions/goals were met, the bushes need to be beaten again to find what else that Shipmate could be doing to improve. You hit the nail on the head about Chiefs being out there willing to bend over backwards to give quality, well - thought guidance. Faith has to be restored in the CDB!

I certainly did not wait for my turn to make Chief.  That's fine if you want to maybe make it at 19 years, but I'm not that patient.  I think the post board CDB is fine, but really the CoC should be engaging you long before that.  It's set up to keep people from falling through the cracks, but as Tony said some people still do.

I talked to and watched the go getter Chiefs, Senior Chiefs and Master Chiefs.  Some don't give great advice, like the favorite "find the jobs no one wants and do them."  They tend to be jobs no one wants for a reason and they also tend not to be high profile or very important.  My opinion is that if you want to pick up chief, and you want to do it earlier than later, you need to do everything.  I wanted to be the guy if they made 1 quota that I was it.

If you wait to the CDB to develop a strategy you have wasted a lot of time.  Your LTB was due June 1, so you may not have been doing anything to make CPO since then because it won't be seen by the board.  Results don't come out until early August, so that's 2 months that were unproductive.  The CDB hopefully will be close to results and you start to develop a 9 month strategy.  Try to develop a continuos longterm strategy.  That doesn't stop when you send in your LTB.  Because even if you do make it the tings that will help you make CPO will probably also help you make SCPO if you get selected.

I'm not talking down on the CDB, they are a great formal way to have the discussion and help reformulate a strategy and come up with ideas.  But if that is the only discussion you are having you are not helping yourself.  Honestly you should know why you didn't make it.  It might be a stupid question to ask, but you should have a realistic idea of what your strengths and weaknesses are.  If you went to mast or received a bad eval, don't have this watch qualification, you know that going in.  You have to make up for that with your strengths or correct the problem if it's fixable: like earning the warfare device you don't have for example.

If you don't get picked up you need to look over your record and see where it's weak, the CDB is a good place to do that.  But it should be a constant process if you are motivated to make Chief.  The guy that says, "I've done everything I can do."  Is being lazy, because it isn't true.

True to fashion

And let's not forget that sometimes the quotas are not filled because there were not enough qualified Sailors (with the Precepts being the guide).

But the bottom line is if that Sailor made it and you did not, he or she had a better set of records than you did.

etfc1121 has an awesome post here on things that can be done for you to become more competative if you don't make it.

I look at CDB's just like eval debriefing, some can be great while others can be counter productive.  I check into my command 2 yrs ago about 7 months before the E6 evals were do, I am a career recruiter so I was place in one of failing station at the district and in the next 6 months, I got qualified DLCPO which in the old days of recruiting is known as Zone Sup, completed my MBA and got recognized by the City for outstanding community service work.  Not to mention one of my sailors who was in the middle of the pack when I took over rose to the top and was CAPPED to 1st class, named Recruiter of the Year. As a station we finished at the Top.  Now back to debriefing part when I had by CDB and Eval debrief the same day and before I saw my eval my LCPO said well I know you are not going to be happy with your eval but it not because you were not ranked against your peers and I know you think you deserved the top spot but you haven't been here long enough.  Complete and utter demoralizing attitude followed from me... Now I wasn't expecting to be an EP because I had just gotten there 7 months earlier however the keep doing what your are doing is what pissed me off.  At the CDB more of the same, well we cant talk to you about education because you got your Master's, we cant say get anymore quals because you are qualified as highest as you can go, well just make sure you continue the fantastic job your are doing got anything for us.  I am like umm yeah I do, what are the other FCPOs doing at the command that stands out and how can I become competitive against my peers, what else can I do to ensure my sailors are among the elite?  I got keep putting in the numbers and everything else will fall where it is suppose to.... I left both the Eval debrief and my CDB pissed off.  A few months later one of the Master Chiefs at the command ask all the FCPOs during a CPO365 event who wanted to be an EP sailor stand up and I looked around and didn't stand up.  Of course all the Chief came over to me and were like "what the heck are you doing"  I politely said, I asked that question at my CDB and eval debrief and got told to keep doing what I am doing, so what was the point in standing up when you all don't have a standard for what an EP sailor looks like?  I know I pissed off a lot of the Chiefs at the command but the new CMC came up to me and was like you need a mentor and I am going to get you to the next level.  You want to be a Chief? I was like yeah he said come see me on Monday and we are going to work on just that.....

When I get back, if I remember I'll start a poll about CDB.

I guess something like "Do you Consider CDBs Useful?"

or you can give me the question

Somebody a while ago stated that post selection-CDB's are not useful because we do not get any feedback from the board.  Maybe your question could be, "Would you consider CDB useful if you got feedback from the selection board on why you were not selected?"

Never going to happen.  The board won't give individual feedback.  That's a separate topic on whether or not they should.

wow did not think my comment would have snowballed this far! I think everyone wants feedback from the board, however I think that the self assessment of your career, records, etc. is key! I personally think that the "why do you think you did not make it" is a great question for them to say. To take the words from Chief earlier...everyone has something to improve upon. For the few that have done their all and still have not picked up try reading over your evals. I had done a sit down with a master chief and our chief's mess and they went over our package. I thought I was good until they explained to me that how something was worded, or an eval seemed overly fluffy and not enough substance, and how the CUM AVG and SUM group AVG was .02 pts above my INDV at a point in my career. I guess what I am trying to say is that I love when a leader is brutally honest with me and I feel sometimes people can do you a disservice by telling you what you wanna hear.

Looks like it's back up now, but it was down for about 5 minutes, specifically the Selection Board tab...

you gonna hit refresh for the next 7 days? I do not know if you saw the posts 10 or 15 pages back but the results are to be released on the 4th and navadmin on the 5th if I am not mistaken.

Yes, I would greatly appreciate that I've got a few hours to kill.
