Washington (CNN)The family of a US Navy officer imprisoned in Japan rallied outside the White House on Wednesday to protest his detention and try to attract President Joe Biden's attention to the case.

Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis was sentenced to three years in a Japanese prison in October for what Japanese courts deemed to be the negligent driving deaths of two Japanese citizens in May 2021. Alkonis appealed, but his sentence was upheld last month.

      Sewage, rats and crime: GAO finds military barracks in deplorable shape

      Barracks life can mean enduring raw sewage overflows, dangerous gas leaks and rodent infestations, according to a new government report saying military officials don’t have a full grasp of the squalor thousands of troops face. U.S. service members also could be at increased risk of sexual assault and other crimes because of chronically broken windows and locks, the Government Accountability Office said Tuesday in a report based on a visit to 10 stateside military bases.

      GAO Report on F-35 Sustainment

      From the report What GAO Found Maintenance challenges negatively affect F-35 aircraft readiness. The F-35 fleet mission capable rate—the percentage of time the aircraft can perform one of its tasked missions—was about 55 percent in March 2023, far below program goals. This performance was due in part to challenges with depot and organizational maintenance (see fig.). The program was behind schedule in establishing depot maintenance activities to conduct repairs. As a result, component repair times remained slow with over 10,000 waiting to be repaired—above desired levels. At the same time, organizational-level maintenance has been affected by a number of issues, including a lack of technical data and training.

      VA expands burial benefits for Veterans and their families

      WASHINGTON — Today, VA announced that Veterans, and their families, caregivers, and survivors now have access to expanded burial benefits to help with end-of-life expenses related to a Veteran’s gravesite, burial, funeral and transportation of remains to their final resting place. Burial benefits are available to individuals who pay for a Veteran’s burial and funeral costs that are not reimbursed by any other organization. The updated burial benefits are: Expanded reimbursement of transportation expenses, to include costs for transporting remains, to state or Tribal Veterans’ cemeteries in addition to previously eligible national cemeteries. Instituted a more generous single payment rate for non-service-connected burial benefits. Extended the VA plot or interment allowance to Tribal organizations.
