Battleships are back! In little more than five months, the shape of America’s future Navy fleet changed. Between February and July, U.S. Navy leadership went from advocating for a modest fleet of 60 cruisers and destroyers to supporting a more robust vision of 96 large surface combatants by 2045.

Nobody really knows what, exactly, pushed the Navy to favoring large combatants—a rating traditionally comprised of high-value cruisers and destroyers. Neither the U.S. Department of Defense, the Secretary of the Navy, nor America’s Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mike Gilday, has offered taxpayers any real detail on what spurred the Navy, after years of fretting over the relevance of large surface combatants, to redirect at least $70 billion in future funding towards building bigger ships.

      Pentagon issues 101 recommendations for suicide prevention to be implemented by end of fiscal 2030

      WASHINGTON — Including unit leaders in more suicide prevention training and increasing mental health services are just two of the more than 100 recommendations that the Pentagon said Thursday will be implemented in the next seven years to help address the suicide crisis in the military. “Suicide prevention is a long-term effort. Change will not happen overnight, but we have no time to spare,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote in a memo announcing the initiative.

      Carrier USS Ronald Reagan Underway from Japan After 11-Day Delay

      Carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) got underway on Friday after canceling its departure six times since Sept. 18. Meanwhile, the Navy’s two Ghost Fleet unmanned surface vessel prototypes, which pulled into Yokosuka on Sept. 18, carried out drills on Wednesday with a U.S. Littoral Combat Ship and a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) frigate. Reagan departed at 9.55 a.m. local time according to the Yokosuka city government. The Navy routinely informs the Japanese government of the departures and arrivals of U.S. nuclear-powered carriers at Japanese ports. The government, via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then informs the relevant city government, which publishes the information as a matter of public interest.
