Major train heists aren't as common now as they were in the Wild West, but railways still carry some highly sensitive cargo that demands heavy-duty, specialized protection. That's why the U.S. Navy, better known for aircraft carriers, submarines and fighter jets, is adding a sleek new armored train caboose to its arsenal, designed to protect shipments of radioactive waste and house mission-relevant security personnel.

      OMB Approves Up to 8,000 New Privatized Beds for Hampton Roads

      The Office of Management and Budget has approved funding between 6,000-8,000 new privatized beds for the Hampton Roads, Va., area, a senior defense official told reporters Thursday. The announcement of the approved funding came during a Thursday roundtable to discuss a new memo by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that lists contiuining efforts to improve the lives of service members and their families.

      U.S. to Assist in Building New Naval Pier at Subic Bay

      The U.S. will support Manila’s plan to build a new naval pier at a Philippine naval base in Subic Bay. A 15-meter by 155-meter finger pier is set to be constructed at Naval Operating Base Subic, homeport of the Philippine Navy’s patrol vessels and frigates. According to the contract, the planning for the pier is under foreign military financing for the Armed Forces of the Philippines and will be in support of Naval Sea Systems Command’s International Fleet Support Program Office, known as PMS 326. Construction of the pier itself will be conducted by the Subic Drydock Corporation, a Philippine company.
