Veterans Crisis Line responder ‘failed to take action’ to prevent shooting death

WASHINGTON — The Veterans Crisis Line mishandled an interaction with a veteran who shot and killed a family member after the call ended, a federal watchdog reported Thursday.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General said the response was “insufficient and delayed,” and that the crisis line responder “failed to take action” to prevent the death.

Seattle Police say Bruce Meneley thought he was meeting an 11-year-old and a 7-year-old at the DoubleTree on Southcenter Parkway. Her home life on the military base was a different story: She hid the stress and increasing danger of her relationship with her husband from everyone. One evening in 2005, with her two small boys in the apartment, Alvarado argued with her husband and the altercation turned violent. He beat her, she said in a recent phone interview, and then stormed out and took her car. She called the police on the military base. “My secret was out in the open,” she said. “The shame just came out of my pores.”
