AME1 you are on Whidbey correct?

 

Yes I am on Whidbey, and I guess maybe it's only the squadrons that combine into 1 class.  I'm not 100% on this, but last year my chief told me that the squadrons don't do phase II independently.  He said it's a big class.

 

You had a CMC on an IA with you? Lucky. I was only ever surrounded by a sea of green or desert tan. I'm jealous.

 

Had a whole Navy COC on both IA's as I was part of a large group of sailors guarding detainee's.

I wasn't saying the whole base, I just wanted to know because Whidbey throws one of the best phase 2 in the Navy.

Yeah that was my bad on that one.  My chief made it sound like the whole base grouped together for phase II, and I was remembering a conversation from a year ago.

I've been trying to think of a way to answer the "I'm a SOY, this qual, that collateral, 9 NAMs, 1,000 volunteer hours, xyz; what are my chances?" questions - without sounding like the snide comment guy at quarters or sounding the ba-caw alarms, while still offering a constructive opinion. <--note the last word.

Do all of those things matter? Absolutely, they can only help - with a caveat. Only if you have a quantifiable outcome listed somewhere in your record. To be honest, who cares if you qualified an E-27 watchstation if you never stood it or were at least proficient at the wheel.

If you're not agonizing over which quantifiable action/outcome leadership/mentorship/sailorization bullets to cut out of your eval submission, something is wrong. Someone mentioned it earlier, a leader lifts other up around him and helps guide them to greater accomplishments that they believed possible.

We live in a "what have you done for ME lately" vacuum. Sad, but true. It 'should' be easy to separate the wheat from the chaff when looking at a half-decade of performance reviews.

I don't put much stock in the leadership CBTs. Mostly because no course can teach you how to be a leader. Can they put you on the correct path? Yes. The rest is up to you.

And finally in my rant, if you're burning through the LS's paper supply to send in all those attachments for your LTB...I think that could possibly be a detractor. If you can't manage your record...you know the rest.

Thanks for the add!! I have lurking for the past two years! Lol I love this forum. Great info and I love this time around to get that Intel! Lol. As far as CPO selectee apperal, they are out in the NEX here in Great Lakes. They also have all a list of names with the tittle chief select in the front of the store. I'm pretty sure it's the FTS list. Good luck to you all

want to remind all those selected to use those that have been doing it before you, such as the reservist and fts. They can help a lot.

Only part of their advice though right? Friendly jab.

If you make Chief this year, you should definitely come down to Port Hueneme, CA next year during induction. The Seabees down there throw an amazing two day event that reenacts some official "land" Naval History, they normally get about 300-500 people. Also if you are ever up in Bangor sub base, there is a 2 ton anchor near a tucked away railway battery. We helped bring that thing all the way back into the woods for another induction exercise, its a pretty amazing sight.

Not to discourage anyone that is thinking about not participating in Phase II, but it gets serious if you don't. A few years back a Chief showed me an e-mail from the MCPON at the time to all Fleet & Force CMCs on to all unit level CMCs that had a finalized list of all Selectees in the Navy that opted out of Phase II. Not joke, the email said Don't welcome them provide them with the treatment. Wow!

Participating in Phase II is a very important decision. It is a no brainier for most, but if your not sure make you think of the cons.

Hey everyone. I've been a lurker for about two years now and have gotten some really great advice and insight from this forum. I have a question regarding the PPME. Did everyone do both the enlisted and officer courses? I have completed the senior enlisted blocks, but wasn't sure about the others. I plan to err on the side of caution and get them done (wasn't possible before this years board) but I was curious what everyone else did. Thanks!

 

I did them all, from Intro PME to PPME, Joint, and Officer

To add to my Aug 5 prediction, the chiefs at my command keep asking me if I'm ready.  Then they follow up with only Two Weeks to go, with an evil grin on their faces.

at a retirement ceremony today I kept getting referred to as " chief select" I didn't know whether I should answer or not

 

That's probably the worst part.  Hearing Chief Select all day..how do you respond to that?

My belief is that you should take it as a compliment that they believe in you that much to call you that before results are on the street.  On the flip side of that, it can totally demoralize you if you're not selected.  It'd be a double edge sword to me because it's saying they see it in you, however, the board didn't.

 

Well stated.The second part of your statement is hard too, but it hasn't stopped me from continuing on with my career.

I'm almost tempted to opt out now if selected to see if there is this mystical list that is going around.

Besides, do you think you'd actually be on the distribution of the let's screw someone over discussion?

You worked this hard to get to the point of selection, you can't stop now.

On a tangent, has anyone ever failed phase II, induction, initiation or whatever PC term we call it now?

:werd: If I don't make it I will take it hard. Been getting the go around since last week about everything. Then again there are only three of us eligible on base. Me, an HM1, and an EOD1.  We are Chief and above heavy so they are chomping at the bit for entertainment.

On the subject of Failing out of Phase II, that would be giving the keys to the kingdom away however, we have held the pinning of Sailors due to the inability to pass the PFA that is synchronized with the end of Phase II.  Trust me, our mess received a lot of glares but it felt good that we as a mess maintained our line, especially when we saw other people turning blind eye's to those counting by two's.  How can we as Chiefs set the tone of the command and set the standard if we cant abide by the rules and regulations? Makes you ask "what else would they be willing to turn a blind eye to?"

 

    Anyways, to finish that thought, we as a mess continued to support said Chief Select until he passed a PFA and was promply pinned upon completion.

 

    To those who want to challange the "Not participating in Phase II", I have come from three Mess' who have never let anyone "Opt Out".  I will say though, If you do not finish, quit, or choose not to participate, it WILL FOLLOW YOU.  As simple as the current CMC calling the gaining CMC.  It can be handled many ways, if on a ship, the E7 will often have a corner in the Mess to eat and promptly depart the Mess OR, many times the E7 will not be involved with CPO things (on shore duty) short of things/meetings/events required to accomplish the mission at hand.... All those phone calls you make "Hey Brother, I need....." aint gonna happen. 

 

    Might sound harsh but it is a rite of passage that you should be proud, and honored to participate in.  If you are praticing networking, and fostering commaradarie in the FCPO mess, team work with fellow FCPO's in your division to mentor and develop Sailors THERE SHOULD NOT BE A DOUBT IN YOUR MIND, "DO I WANT THIS CPO MESS TO ACCEPT ME AS A NEW CHIEF AND AS THEIR BROTHER or SISTER?" I would gladly argue that the CPO Mess is the largest, most trusted, best networked, and RESPECTED community in ANY DOD Organization!

 

    As far as the MCPON maintaining a "black list" of non Initiated/Inducted/Transitioned/Phase II'd E7's, thats bogus......I will say though the word gets round and even if it didnt, as a Chief who is part of the Mess, you can quickly tell who has or has not been accepted.

Wow, almost 10 pages since last night... Lots of catching up. First off, I don't know why anyone in their right mind would opt out (I would use another phrase). Whatever... That subject seems to me not worth talking about, but I was struck by another subject. I don't know what "grading" tools are used by board members these days, but it does concern me. I do not have a lot of acronyms behind my name. I am not Petty Officer xxx, with MOVSM, AASDOT, JPME, BNCHABS and all that. Not knocking people that are doing all that, but I was always told that making Chief wasn't based on what acronyms you were able to attain, but how you managed the acronyms you did attain. But it does concern me as there is no real feedback about the board results. I steered my career in the path that the precepts guided throughout the years, I took hard assignments, led a lot of ppl successfully, did GSA and recruiting and was always fully qualified, yet I don't pick up. Every year I see ppl on here that list their collaterals like service awards and when the name list comes out, I see them say "I Made it!" Then I politely encourage them and stare at the next road ahead while I look at the one hard next year in front of me and move on. I have no JPME or any stuff like that. I have no time for it. My time is spent on my Sailors, the mission, my family, college and occasional volunteer. But now, I am tired. I am five years from retirement and I don't want to play anymore. If it is all about the Acronyms... I personally don't care anymore. If that is how I am graded, then I just wasted the last 8 years refining my career. I have enjoyed my time in the Navy and in the grand scheme of things, putting on Anchors really means nothing. It's a promotion and although a significant one, is really just that. More pay, more responsibility, but empty in the end without purpose, trying to grasp oil with your hands. So I guess in a nutshell, it would suck not to pick up because of acros, but in the end, I really don't care. I work hard for the Navy not for a title. If I pick up, I will work hard for the Navy, If I don't, I will work hard for the Navy. In the words of Boxer, "I will work harder!"

At the Pearl Harbor uniform store there was Chief select gear there, but it was kind of hidden in the Under Armor stuff that is usually on clearance.  The color for them is grey, so I know they are not from last year.  Finally received my orders to report to school on 8 September, so this will be and interesting

predicament if I am selected this year.  Good luck to all!

Looking at your frustration, I get it.  We were all there at one point or another but if I may, There are multiuple ways of seeking non direct feedback....I am sure you know one or two fellow AO's who were selected over the years, follow up with them (after the season) and ask them for a copy of their selected EVAL and the last 5 years, I do this all the time for any IT1 who asks.  As I have stated on this forum multiple times, if you are asking a Chief who has never sat a board, you are doing yourself a diservice based on their feed back. 

 

    Dont get me wrong they are able to help refine your EVALs, guide your career BUT take the extra step on your own to reach out to a MCPO who has sat a board and ask for mentorship and guidance and have this heart to heart with him or her.  THAT IS THE TRUE FEED BACK, I know a lot of people say, "I cant do that" or "They never respond", this is a test of your ability to network.  Reach out to them and seek this advice..... They will tell you point blank, "This is your year"/"This is a select EVAL" OR "This is not your year but this is what you need to do, or do better." Once you have established contact, it is just a point of constant mentorship, guidance, and ultimately a final reviewer of your EVAL (These are the steps I took and I was successful!).

I can't see it being this week I remember a last year a couple days before the TRIAD release the MCPON put out the release dates and he hasn't done that yet this year. Hope I'm wrong but it's just a thought.
