After a farmer died, his town learned he secretly paid strangers' pharmacy bills

Hody Childress was a farmer living off his meager retirement savings in the small town of Geraldine, Ala.

About 10 years ago, he walked into Geraldine Drugs and pulled aside owner Brooke Walker to ask if there were families in town who couldnā€™t afford to pay for their medications.

ā€œI told him, ā€˜Yes, unfortunately that happens often,ā€™ā€ recalled Walker, 38. ā€œAnd he handed me a $100 bill, all folded up.ā€

      Navy didnā€™t understand well-documented risks posed by Hawaii fuel tanks, watchdog says

      HONOLULU (AP) ā€” Navy officials ā€œlacked sufficient understandingā€ of the risks of maintaining massive fuel storage tanks on top of a drinking water well at Pearl Harbor where spilled jet fuel poisoned more than 6,000 people in 2021, a U.S. military watchdog said Thursday. That lack of awareness came even though officials had engineering drawings and environmental studies that described the risks, the U.S. Department of Defenseā€™s inspector general said.
