WASHINGTON ā€” The leader of the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system predicted difficulty Wednesday with administering coronavirus vaccines to its patients, particularly veterans in rural areas.

Richard Stone, executive in charge of the Veterans Health Administration, testified before the Senate Veteransā€™ Affairs Committee about the departmentā€™s strategy for administering a coronavirus vaccine once one is available. The VA ordered 73,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine last week and prepared 37 medical centers to receive and administer them. However, that wonā€™t be nearly enough to reach veterans across the country, Stone said.

      HONOLULU (AP) ā€” Navy officials ā€œlacked sufficient understandingā€ of the risks of maintaining massive fuel storage tanks on top of a drinking water well at Pearl Harbor where spilled jet fuel poisoned more than 6,000 people in 2021, a U.S. military watchdog said Thursday. That lack of awareness came even though officials had engineering drawings and environmental studies that described the risks, the U.S. Department of Defenseā€™s inspector general said.
