Each Future Chief Petty Officer on this forum should come up with one really thought provoking question for others to chime in on. Something that is deep and gets each of us thinking about leadership, development, success, failure, and so on. Don't just let the discussion on here revolve around the same comments of I can't wait and what date do you think they will be out? Here's a question to get it started.

How have you failed in your life? How did the failure impact you and how have you used it to help yourself and others?

Well I have had failures before and one hat has impacted me the most is not getting to know my junior sailors when I have been in those positions to do so. I have learned more from my sailors both personal and professional, that failure has made me a better leader and has pushed me to ensure that everyone in the shop knows more about each other, from the top down.

Honestly, that is a statement of your own career's success - in a genuine way too.

I have had a few good leaders in my career that have impacted me. I still speak to a couple of them on occasion. Who has been that impact leader for you and how did they impact you to be the leader you are today?

I brought this up in my SOY competition in San Diego, which the board members did not see it from my perspective.  They thought I should move on from it, however I argued that learning from it enables me to talk to sailors  about my  mistakes in the effort they avoid it.  I had a DUI in 2003, luckily I did not hurt anyone. There is not a day that goes by that it does not come up in my head.  While the initial experience was painful, it saved my life and career.  I also try to tell my shipmates, that while costly mistakes set you back, it can be recovered from if you work very hard.  I was facing HYT and went from E-4 to E-6 in under four years.

Yes! Getting to know your Sailors overall and taking care of them is great for the Navy, your shop or office and your career in the Navy. How many supervisors get to know their junior Sailors only when they get in trouble? I think it's fantastic on your part, because it seems genuine, and the added benefit is that it is great for your career. :D

Ok, thank you. I try my best to lead them the way that I wish I could have been led when I was in their shoes. I had some really good leaders but few and far between to help out that much. I want my juniors to have which I didn't. They deserve that much because I know if I don't do it then someone else might not. I try to take different leadership styles that I have seen over the years and change them around to tailor it for me and teach my junior leaders to do the same.

Well, the Senior Chief that I admired the most lead by getting to know us. That's what reminded me - when I read your post.

Starting to have to fight to stay awake so thought I'd drop by, and check the rumor mill.  Tried to go to bed early since I had to get up for mustering PO this morning.  Didn't want to chance going back to sleep since I have to be at work in a couple hours.  Should be a fun week with the short notice AMI starting tomorrow.  Found out the dates I think it was the 2nd week in June.  This post has gained a few pages since I was last on.  The poll still betting on the 3rd for triad release?  Should get the official announcement of the release soon I'd guess.  Wasn't it last year they gave us the date almost 2 weeks in advance, or are my cycles starting to blur together (I at least know it was since I've been in Whidbey)?

Yes sir. The only problem is the forum software which will not take the beating. But that is something to fix down the road. The first aid station has been replenished and is good to go. This year I bought 'ordie' band-aids just in case, due to the high ordie member count. They have little bombs on them. The HM band-aids still have teddy bears...

I like the ones with little bombs, maybe you can get some with John Finn on them too. :)

Yes it would be. I actually got to meet him back in 2007. He was a great man.

Nice, not to many people outside of Ordies know who his is. Great lesson for people to learn some Naval History

That one guy the Wing building out in K-bay is named after?  Heard the ordies talking about him when I was stationed in El Centro.  They would take a pilgrimage to his residence a few times a year.  (I mean no disrespect by the remarks)

There's a barracks building named in his honor out here at North Island.  While on SAPR watch, the Chief that was roving with me said that it would behoove us FCPOs to know about him.  John W. Finn was a true hero.

Yes, he is the "GodFather" of AOs. He is the only AO to receive the Medal Of Honor from WWII during the attack on Pearl Harbor. No disrespect taken
