FY17 Chief Selection Board

I have to admit that I'm dumbfounded when the SBE list rolls out and folks are scrambling around trying to get their records squared away. I see it every year. And then there are those folks who have examined their records with a microscope who still feel the need to submit a LTB.

As far as the letter to the board, the only thing I have ever submitted is a memo from my detailer explaining that she broke my sea-shore rotation for yada yada. Around here, I feel like the black sheep - "you didn't submit a LTB? Tisk tisk."

I'm just curious why that is almost always THE topic come April-May. My sea-dad broke it down for me in crusty Sailor speak - the LTB is not a vehicle to draw attention to what you feel is important, and if you're sending one for stuff you completed after you found out you got a ticket to the dance then you're drawing attention to the fact that you weren't prepared in the first place. (I omitted the swearing and name calling)

I understand that records can get messed up, things don't get added, etc. But it's on each of us to CONSTANTLY ensure that new qual, or award or whatever shows up electronically shortly after you get that 613 or cert or etc.

Your first time up for CPO will include some E5 EVALs anyways. There could be a number of reasons for going back. Maybe there's a qualification they want to verify or as you stated a tie breaker. Maybe they want to measure how far back your performance goes compared to someone else. It is the board's discretion.

This is my first time up so they will see some E5 evals. Some chiefs told me to think of it as an SOQ board and base it off points, the more points the better so this would make sense, thank you!

I work in admin so I know what you mean. We started telling first classes to start getting their record prepared a year out. Get their quals, awards, courses, anything they needed turned in so it would be entered even before the CPO exam in January. We tell people get everything entered in to NSIPS and OMPF way in advance and you won't even have to submit a LTB unless you want to.

I share the same sentiment. However, as we get closer to the release date, I keep doubting myself. I keep asking myself if my LTB was done correctly as far as the format, wording etc.? Was it not done to their liking? Did I submit too much? Granted, I had a few Chiefs look at it and gave me their blessing, but I would hate to think I could possibly not get chosen due to something I could have fixed. Last year for sure I know I submitted WAY too much, but it was my first time and was told if you think its important to submit, then do so. This year, I only submitted stuff that was recently earned and not previously documented, such as a NAM, SEJPME I Certificate and NEC 2379 certificate of completion for example. 

Maybe I am being a little silly about this whole process, but hey, when we put our blood, sweat, and tears into our Sailors and the possible opportunity of being accepted into the Chiefs Mess, I suppose every little thing can raise questions and concerns. Regardless of the outcome, I am a better leader today from all the wisdom shared on this forum over the past year and a half. Thank you all very much.

I completely agree with you, I catch myself thinking sometimes if I have done good enough or have I done enough. The LTB is a hard thing to do too cause like you said, is it in the right format or is the wording right. who know if it is or if it isn't, I guess the best we can do is just follow the format given to us and just check the correspondence manual as well. I have always been impressed when someone goes out of their way to help others they do not know simply from the kindness of their heart. In my mind it's like "What makes that person want to help other shipmate in a genuine way?" 

Believe it or not, in the past, I have also had officers and chiefs drop in and send me emails with some good gouge. They don't become members, they simply send info without their name and leave it at that. Can you imagine that? An officer or Chief anonymously helping out enlisted? Pretty cool if you ask me just as it is pretty cool that @CPO_Pride247 helps others achieve their goal of making Chief (and/or career). Now that impresses me and judging by other posts, it impresses other members.

But how you become "Trusted Member" is still something out of the Da Vinci Code or even pirates of the Caribbean...

That's what it is all about. I know I wouldn't be where I was today if someone didn't help me out. So I am returning the favor to who may never need it. i tell my junior sailors that it's not about me, that it's about them and I hope that one day they can be where I am at if not higher.

Can't do it this year because of time constraints. The other one I had, written in PHP does not function on this forum for some reason.

I don't think we can come to a consensus is cause it is never really clear when the results are gonna come out until the date is given but there is a couple things we can agree on. 1. It's stressful awaiting the results. 2. The results will be out between the 3 and 5th of August

Okay, so actually I may have a countdown Javascript function I can use. It would go to a link to the NavyAdvancement.com website. If we finalize a fictitious date of which everyone likes betting on anyway, I can try setting up a countdown.

I'm gonna go with Aug 4th. The reason I pick that day is because it's close to a weekend and still gives time for a public release before the weekend
