If you have only served on one type of sea platform, does the board look at you negatively?

What matters most is not where you are, but what you are doing and the impact. Board members focus on job progression as stated in the precept. If you are lucky to have been on different platforms and performed well, it would help. Its just like going IA or having sexy titles like LPO or LCPO at sea. How you performed with those titles or while on IA is what is relevant. Just going IA alone means nothing. Block 43 on the eval and 41 on the CPO fitrep is the block that determines your selection or non selection. When you hear folks get selected with an MP or P, read those blocks and you will see why. All PO1s SHOULD look at a CPO eval and precept before writing their evals. Your chance for selection is easier if board members see you already performing as a Chief. Its not enough just saying it on the opening or closing statement of the eval; the eval should be written to send that message. This tip is from Master Chiefs that have sat the CPO/SCPO/MCPO boards.

quick poll. who all submitted Summary Letters with packages? That will give us a reference on maybe if it helped or not when results come out.

I did not. I had it all typed up and last minute I changed my mind.

I also did not.  I probably will when I get a few more tours under my belt.  Especially when key milestones roll off of the 5 year window.

I did.

I submitted a Summary Letter and a few other things.  But I have seen people make Chief that sent in nothing, and I know of a guy who basically sent his entire service record and made Chief.  So we'll see how it goes.

If you have SSP, you have SSP.  No course, package, degree, title, summary letter, secret handshake, ect is going to put you above that line unless it illustrates SSP.

exactly. some ratings don't have much choice in the platform. Long as you are constantly growing as a leader/responsibilities. its takes more than being an SME in your rating.

Exactly,  As an AEGIS FC I can only go to AEGIS Cruisers or Destroyers.  It's definitely what you do while you are there.  NPC has career paths showing where you should be at xx years of service.  I strive to stay ahead of that.  Just doing that is setting you ahead of the norm.

I did not submit a letter.  I don't think I will be selected due to almost nonexistent advancement opportunity in my rating, but I feel my package speaks for itself.  No letter needed.

Full disclosure:  I didn't submit a letter last year either, and here I am...

I did last yr, but not this yr.  I read on the ppt on NPC where the question was asked whether you should submit one and the response was to only send documents not in your OMPF.  It's sort of freelancing to me, but I've seen people make it either way.

I did not send a summary letter. I was told by several Chiefs up to Master Chiefs to not waste my time as it is not an official document; time looking at an unofficial document is time taken away from your official documents.

well, my thought on the summary letter is this:  why would you submit one when your record holds that same exact information?  Don't duplicate what is already in the record right? IJS

I sent a package that had some awards and quals that were not in my OPMF/NSIPS.  The only letter I sent was the standard cover letter, but no summary.

Good to see another AC on the forum! I would say that you are very competitive! I left the schoolhouse in March 2013. It was the most rewarding tour of my career and now it's awesome to work with some of my former students and see the fruits of my labor pay off with them getting qualified in the fleet!

As far as the summary letter is concerned I submitted last year (didn't make it), I didn't send one this year. And I didn't in years past. Guidance says not to. I know people that have made it the year that they submitted one and I know those that didn't submit and made it.

Still going with the dart board theory.............. :)

It is nice to see a fellow AC here.  Well good luck to both of us, we'll know soon enough.

I checked in late January this year.  You might know ACC Herren then, she convinced me to become an Instructor.

I know her well….Shes awesome.  Theodore Roosevelts quote of "Speak softly and carry a big stick" describes her well.  Im glad that she was selected last year!  She gave you some great advice.  The schoolhouse will reward you greatly if you put in the work.  PM me if you need any advice!  Good luck to you!  This is my 5th time up and if i don't make it, I will keep up the press!  Thats the best advice that I can give you if you don't make it.
