After growing up in a Marine Corps family, Tiege Downes enlisted out of high school. As a Marine in a scout-sniper platoon, he deployed overseas and expected he’d go to college after his active-duty military service and then return as an officer.

But his initial return to civilian life was uneasy. “I started to feel like I didn’t really have a purpose, the same purpose that was given to me in the Marine Corps,” Downes says.
