Question for all enlisted Yeoman/Personnel man who served aboard a naval vessel or shore base.  Was one of your responsibilities filling/moving cruise boxes from your air station to the ship or vice versa?

 

A little background.  As a yeoman I served aboard USS Nimitz, squadron VA-35 from 1983 to 1986.  I loved typing and performing administrative duties whether onboard or at NAS Oceana.  I always felt I was a go between enlisted and officers.  Maybe joining up when I turned 30 years old helped.  Even in boot camp I was called an old man rightfully so.  Exercising was not my forte!  Think about it I'am 30 and most recruits were 19 or 20 yrs. old.  Anyways, I was never really told what my duties were other than typing forms.  I soon learned everything was open to interpretation or using my smarts to make life easier.  So, whenever my squadron moved to the ship we (meaning myself, another yeoman and some personnel men) were responsible for packing manuals, pamphlets, supplies and anything we would need on the cruise.  You didn't forget anything.  At the time I served we received a Xerox 860 word processor.  100% improvement in storing documents and forms for later use.  We still did electric typing and I remember having to type forms with no mistakes.  I also trained as a legal yeoman and soon learned I was responsible for the paperwork taking an enlisted mans pay or reduction in paygrade after NJP (non-judicial punishment).  I hated lifting cruise boxes and hauling the squadrons mail bags off of a COD through the passageways and down the ladders.  I am now 71 yrs old and enjoy retirement in North Carolina.  Just curious, did you have similar duties or was each squadron or ships company different?   

A simple yes or no is good, unless you want to offer some of your life as a yeoman/personnel man while serving.  Thanks, Walt

Lieutenant (LT) Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO), CHC, CWE, Cryptologic Warfare (CW), Dental Corps (DC), FAO, Intelligence Officer (INTEL), IP, Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAGC), MC, Medical Service Corps (MSC), MSO, NC, and SC will follow the below as applicable: a. 2XFOS LTs covered in paragraph 4 with less than 18 YOAS and selected for continuation will be continued for a period of three years, but not beyond retirement eligibility at 20 YOAS. b. 2XFOS LTs covered in paragraph 4 with 18 or more YOAS, in line with references (a) and (b), will not be considered for continuation, but will instead be retained on active-duty until retirement eligible at 20 YOAS. c. In no case will any 2xFOS LTs covered in paragraph 4 be continued or retained beyond the last day of the month in which the officer becomes eligible for retirement under reference (b) or the last day of the month in which the officer becomes 62 years of age, whichever is earlier. 5. Commander (CDR), LCDR, and LT LDOs: a. All LDOs selected for promotion in FY-25 who are subject to mandatory retirement for YOAS prior to their scheduled promotion dates and/or prior to completing the time-in-grade (TIG) necessary to retire in the next higher grade after promotion will be considered for continuation. If selected, these officers will be continued for a period sufficient to allow them to accept promotion and, as required, attain sufficient TIG to retire at the higher grade. b. All LDOs who are on active duty at the time when the promotion board meets and are considered in zone for promotion and who are subject to mandatory retirement for YOAS prior to the end of FY-24 will be considered for continuation. If selected, these officers will be continued for a period sufficient to allow them to accept promotion and, as required, attain sufficient TIG to retire at the higher grade or, if not selected for promotion, until the end of FY-24. 6. Chief Warrant Officers (CWO): a. Correspondence not originated by the eligible officer, including endorsement to the letter of the eligible officer and letters written on behalf of that officer, must contain a written acknowledgement by the eligible officer that he or she desires such correspondence be presented to the board.       Navy to begin search and salvage effort for downed Army Black Hawk

      The Navy will soon begin search and salvage operations for an Army MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea on Nov. 10, killing all five special operations soldiers on board. Sgt. Cade M. Wolfe, Sgt. Andrew P. Southard, Staff Sgt. Tanner W. Grone, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shane M. Barnes and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen R. Dwyer died in the mishap.
