ODESA, Ukraine — A port of vital interest to the U.S. military is bombed and destroyed in a future great-power battle, with sunken ships and piers in the water blocking access for ships trying to resupply American forces.

Navy Seabee divers and salvage divers are scattered across the theater conducting smaller missions, but the fight can’t continue until this major job is done — the underwater wreckage cleared and the port infrastructure rebuilt so resupply at this hub can resume. In this worst-case scenario for the U.S., the only way to get the port operating again may be to integrate the usually-separate divers — underwater construction and salvage — into a single unit unlike anything the Navy has fielded in the past.

      U.S. Navy's Afloat Accident Rate Hits Decade High, Led by MSC

      The U.S. Naval Safety Command has released its accident numbers for FY2024, and the report shows a rising rate of serious mishaps in the fleet. The number of afloat Class A mishaps - accidents resulting in a fatality, permanent disability, or property damage over $2.5 million - rose to a decade-high number, led by accidents in the surface fleet and a spike in casualties at Military Sealift Command. To be sure, the statistics suggest that the Navy loses far fewer personnel at sea than on land. The average rate of class A mishaps is many times higher on shore, where personal motor vehicle accidents claim the lives of about 40 sailors a year - the majority in motorcycle crashes. (On average, off-duty motorcycle riding is the most dangerous activity in the Navy.)

      Navy removes CO of Airborne Command & Control Squadron 115

      The Navy ousted the commanding officer of the Airborne Command & Control Squadron 115 on Friday, making him the third commanding officer the service has fired in November. Cmdr. Charles Diehl was removed from his leadership role due to a “loss of confidence in his ability to command,” according to the service.

      The release of a police report with graphic details of sexual assault allegations against Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to be Defense secretary, is stoking concerns among current and former Defense Department officials that the agency could backslide on efforts to put an end to those abuses in the military. Officials fear that Hegseth, whose nomination had already caused controversy due to his opposition to women serving in combat, could also hurt efforts to recruit women into the military. “To have someone who now at least has had a police investigation and paid a victim, enforced a [nondisclosure agreement] regarding a sexual assault sends a horrific message,” said a former DOD official. “It likely means that any progress the department has made regarding sexual assault, sexual harassment is going to be at best, repealed, if not completely eliminated.”
