Navy sends three ships into Black Sea as Russia takes notice

The U.S. Navy has three warships operating in the Black Sea, stepping up its presence in the region after a drop in overall NATO maritime activity there last year.

The destroyer USS Porter began its transit into the sea Thursday in support of NATO efforts, joining two other Navy vessels conducting operations in the strategic waterway, the Naples, Italy-based 6th Fleet said.

      GAO: Navy ‘Wasted’ $1.84 Billion in Repairs to Cruisers Cut from the Fleet

      An ambitious 12-year plan to modernize the Navy’s aging guided-missile Ticonderoga-class cruiser fleet wasted $1.84 billion in attempting to fix ships that the service ultimately chose to decommission, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Tuesday. The Senate-ordered investigation into the phased cruiser modernization plan found that since 2015, the service spent $3.7 billion to modernize seven cruisers and will only successfully deliver three back to the fleet.

      US warplane shot down in Red Sea 'friendly fire' incident

      An American fighter jet has been shot down over the Red Sea in an apparent "friendly fire" incident, the US military has said. Both crew from the US Navy F/A-18 Hornet ejected safely, with one suffering minor injuries, according to Central Command. The incident came after the US carried out a series of air strikes against a missile storage site and command facilities in the Yemeni capital Sanaa operated by Iran-backed Houthi militants.

      Retired US Navy chief petty officer sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography

      HOUSTON — A retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer was sentenced Thursday to 160 months in federal prison for receiving child pornography, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson, Southern District of Texas. The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS). Dieter David Palmer, 42, was identified as a person who purchased a membership to child pornography websites that were under investigation. The investigation began as a Department of Justice operation (Operation Flicker) targeting a criminal organization operating multiple commercial child pornography websites. U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison, who handed down the sentence March 22, also ordered Palmer to be on supervised release for life, and he must register as a sex offender.
