The logbook was akin to a file containing all the navy's information on how other ships sound. The man revealed that some entries were particularly peculiar, either moving very quickly with no identifiable source for the noise in the vicinity, or producing strange sounds like buzzing, which were clearly unnatural and unlike any ship noises they had ever encountered
