This is kind of left field but in the case the fts results drop and I get a N, what else should be doing specifically as a YN that would make me more competitive? I have done successful tours at 5 different duty stations - VR squadron, NOSC, FFG, IA, and now an NRD. I'm now Acting LCPO, I have been an LPO since like 04 and I was a 2nd then. I have esws pin, Lpo at sea of course, Admin Officer qualified at my nRD, soq 3x, soy once, one of the soq were for this past qtr. Limdu coordinator, CiAC, CAT Team.... lead 5 people (3 civilians, 2 sailors...) all excel and advance with awards etc....

I just read from the other forums that a lot of the firsts are top notch and don't get picked. Never seemed to merit EPs from my commands though I'm always high MP.... just a bit confused, YN or PS Chiefs, enlighten me! LOL.

I was reading your list and it is pretty impressive....what I did not see was any community service(MOVSM)....civilian education, or military education....have you done correspondence courses and the ppme/jpme courses....what did you do for your IA...they are not all created equal...do you have any NEC's...what about collaterals..i.e. DAPA, CMEO,CDB, CTT, CFL...the ones that really affect the command. Although LPO is nice the board realized that everyone can't be LPO and that means that it doesn't make or break a candidate....were your soqs at the NOSC and if so did you get regional?

I have completed 7 college classes to date. As far as military education I have always been one who has ended up having to learn on my own because my requests for military courses were declined throughout my career..examples: RPPM when I was respay guy and Lpo at NOSC, adv yn ps course, security mgr, WINATOs, legal officer and finally admin officer course at my NRD! Lol.. I'm CFL, CAT, CIAC and LIMDU Coordinator... only YN right now with two PS and three civilians so I had to find that balance. No regional SOQ. I admit to lacking COMREL and JPME/PPME. I was running Base legal while on IA. I have two IA NECs. I have done hundreds of NKO courses including the yn ones, YN 3&2, 1&C, on three training teams while on the FFG...

It sounds like you're doing all you can with what you have been given but I would say knockout all of the correspondence courses...especially those that even remotely apply to your rate...eval, legal, security, personnel man, ESO, customer service, equal opportunity...etc.....and definitely knockout those NKO advanced admin courses, Im doing those right now... the jpme and ppme are in the precepts and are EXTREMELY important because it shows military knowledge and that is the only way to prove that you have the potential to pass it on because it shows that you know it....are your evals focused on management, leadership, mentoring, and sailorization? I have some great power points on my desktop at work that I will post on here monday when I get back to work. Ive looked at and read pointers from board members all the way back to 2002...lol...I read one that stated that the first thing they do is look for disqualifying factors....they eliminate a lot of candidates that way.

Thats good....In my evals I tried to focus mostly on my collaterals of CCC, ESO, DAPA, and things of that nature, vice doing PS work because Im a PS and that kind of work is what Im expected to do. I would suggest sitting on CDB's...as many as you can..They look upon that favorably...Sailorization is another big one. If you can't get the DAPA collateral, see if you can get the ADAMS for facilitators course. This course means you can teach the ADAMS for supervisors course(which is mandatory for all E5-O3) and the ADAMS for managers class(which is mandatory for all CO's and SEL's)...The course is only about 4-5 days and would look Great in your write up.

For me it has been hard to say: 1 NCM, 5 NAM, 2 MOVSM, 1 SOY, 1 RCC SOY, 1 NCR SOY
Bachelor degree, numerous EP's,Command LPO, warfare device. Always getting the "N" there was a minor hiccup in my eval, but thats about it. Except my unit assignments STAFF, STAFF, STAFF, converted FTS (Tried to goto Sea 3x), NOSC NOSC NOSC, Battalion

Last year i looked up who made it for a friend and researched their PEBD, so it appeared that it was a couple of old salts,
and then everyone else was junior to her. So that is a rationalization that made sense, because she did nothing different this past year, and she was selected. WELL OVER DUE IMO, but shes got 18 years in, and obviously she has no intentions of seeing that HYT for many more years!!!

I won't even get started with the collaterals, not rinky dink ones, but major command collaterals.

How were your write ups? Did you stand out....what did you do for other sailors?...Would the hiccup have been enough to disqualify you? FTS is hard to stand out because some commands are larger and can afford to let their people go IA and to schools....others are smaller and can't afford to let anyone go for an extended period of time....That should be annotated somewhere on the eval so that it doesnt look like you were just stagnant. I would definitely say that from reading staff 3x and nosc 3x...that probably didnt look good next to yn's that have been operational.

Great personal achievements, but they mean nothing to board members if people that work for you have nothing, unless you are at some kind of independent duty where you are the lone wolf.

Well the hiccup was an NJP, long story, but it was an improper mast, and it was removed from my record, however the only way to get it removed from my eval would be to do a BCNR, and with 2 years till retirement it is what it is. I shot straight to the top, i received an EP from the same reporting senior the next year. Weird. I think i am screwed because i should have fought harder for a sea billet. In the end, I wouldn't be married to my wonderful, supporting wife, nor would i have my AWESOME son. So, Im happy with whatever. I made a promise to my grandmother that I will do everything I can to be in khaki's before she died, and now she has breast cancer. Surgery next monday, so now im scared about being selected. One doesn't have to do with the other, but in my twisted mind it kinda does.

At every command I have been the LPO and above my fellow PO1's. Since i was shore duty, i took every advantage (school, movsm, and of course i was given collaterals because of knowledge and past experiences with them)

DAPA
ESO
CCC
LDTA
GTCC APC
Cmd Sponsor Coordinator
IT DH
FRC
CIAC
FLTMPS Admin
ITEMPO
etc

Funny part is, I hold all of those collaterals now. My write up was powerful, however, someone removed all my collateral justifications and thought stating what I did for admin meant more. Wait, is that the violin i hear now? However, the bottom statement was if only 2 YN's are selcted make this superstar your first pick.

I am in a unique situation where I am stationed. My active staff is small, but when I am awarded for something great, my staff is awarded for something great. I believe in the team concept fully. Especially in admin, we have a lot of SELRES and it takes all of us to get the job done. The best i can offer my non-rates (OF1) is career advice, mentorship, and definately push them to get their warfare qual. We are tracking now, more than 50% have quald and pinned in present year. Only 3 more to go!!!
