Its never to early to get ready for next year, so here we go!
As a matter of fact I am probably late to get this topic kicked into gear.

Full steam ahead! lets scheme together and figure out how to get the best package ready for next year.

The goal is to provide the board members with so many exceptionally qualified sailors that they actually have
to work really hard to find the stand-outs among the stand-outs!!

Good luck to all and may we all find a way to avoid the "N"

You are right shipmate to be thinking about next year but forget the best package the goal should be no package lets review records now and ensure its updated everyone has at least 9 months to take care of that. Go to a Master chief in your rating and ask for advice then someone in a different rating to get another prospective. A lot of things in your record that might be missing should be identified at the CDB. Good luck and hopefully you're on the list next year.

Thanks Copperdog for starting this forum. I, like alot of other hopefuls will be reviewingt his forum getting ready for next year. I am grateful for the opportunities the Navy has given me but it does not take away from the dissappointment if not getting selected after all of the "checks" are in the blocks. I was told that my current duty is the reason I was not selected. All I can say is choose your shore duty wisely. Look at the precepts when choosing and consider the sacrifices. If you need a break, take a break but know it will cost you. If you take a difficult shore duty, make sure it gets documented in your evaluations and if possible; it is in the precepts. Not all shore special programs are good for your "out of the box" career.

Things I'm hearing from those that sat the board is that if PRIMS was missing any information you were immediately set aside. I know that in the past if you had errors/missing information in PRIMS you would be placed on hold until corrected, that was not the case this year and you should expect that in the future years that if your PRIMS isn’t 100% expect to not be competitive.

How is that possible if PRIMS data isnt looked at until the post board scrub? The only way I could see that happening is if they did a pre board scrub which is a good thing. How many times are people selected only to be put on hold and then not even qualify to fill the quota?...This is better for those that have everything in order.

I don't think there is a "bad" shore duty. Someone has to fill those billets. What counts on shore duty is what you do while you are not in the difficult billets..i.e. community service, education, naval education and training...all the small things that you have time to focus on on shore that you couldn't at sea.

I have a questions irt FY14. What do you think about a PO1 that states he/she does not want to take the test next year, because they have made up their mind on retiring. Why try and take a quota when their heart is set on retirement. I know people may say making Chief changes everything. I am sure it does, but several friends including myself are at this bridge and the debate is getting interesting.

Trying not to get aggravated but I kept telling my command that I needed to get my PRIMS updated. I kept on them and kept on them. I was told "Oh dont worry they will just put you on hold if you are selected." I really hope that isn't true that they put us to the side and didn't even consider us. Oh my PRIMS was finally updated last week but who cares now...

I think the board will see someone that wants to retire...the powerpoint that they put out stated that they look at people who get serious close to HYT and are leery of them because they dont want to select someone that has "suddenly seen the light" and is looking to make Chief just to retire....For someone that doesnt care I would say just go ahead and retire...I think for some it is easier going out on their own terms than being told you cant stay.

I just called the Reserve Selection Board Support number on NPC's website and was told the Board does not look at PRIMS information. But I'm thinking, if someone just sat on the Board and they did in fact pull up PRIMS information, then what PRC said above would be true.

PRC said that we wouldn't be "competitive" which doesn't mean we are put to the side. My CMC and Another Master Chief who both sat on CPO boards both stated the main thing they pay attention too is your last 5 Evals and what you sent to the board that they don't have enough time to go in that much depth with the amount of records they need to look at with the time given. So for what it's worth my NCCM sat 2 reserve boards in a row I'll take his word more as a solid gospel of what happens. My CMC sat many USN CPO boards as well. I guess we will see. It is what it is.

I'm so glad I do not have missing PRIMS info. Hopefully, everyone who does will be afforded an opportunity to get their PRIMS updated.

If that is true then it doesnt pay to follow the navadmin or the powerpoint when they say don't send whats already in your record....If all they really look at is what is sent in and evals then one should send in every single certificate and qual that they have since the members dont want to scour through the page 4's.

Well, truth is what happens behind close doors in the tank. We will never know. We abide by the navadmin and prepare for the board. How they conduct the board is a mystery...so if I'm told to send it in by one who sat it 2x in a row and said make sure you send to the board what you want them to see cause they can easily overlook small print of a special qual etc. just saying. I'm trusting the guidance.

And I'm not trying to stir anything. This whole process is tough. I'm just saying this is what was advised to me. Again it is what it is. I just hope when the dust clears that I will see an "S" or see it within the next 4 years.
